A Flash of Red in the Azure: The Enchanting Red-tailed Tropicbird

首頁 / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Red in the Azure: The Enchanting Red-tailed Tropicbird

While our mountain retreat offers breathtaking vistas and an immersion in Costa Rica’s lush, emerald interior, avid birdwatchers might crave a glimpse of the ocean’s treasures. Today, we set our sights on a magnificent creature that, although not a permanent resident, graces our Pacific shores with its presence – the Red-tailed Tropicbird.

Want a deeper dive? Start here: Hiking Trails Costa Rica.

Imagine this: You’re on a rare excursion to one of Costa Rica’s stunning coastal towns, basking in the sun and the salty breeze. Suddenly, a flash of white streaks across the cerulean canvas of the sky. As it draws closer, the unmistakable crimson tail feathers unfurl, betraying the identity of this aerial acrobat – the Red-tailed Tropicbird.

A Master of the Open Ocean

Unlike many of the feathered wonders you’ll encounter at our retreat, the Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) is a creature of the vast, open ocean. Its streamlined body, reaching up to 37 inches in length with a wingspan of nearly 4 feet, is perfectly adapted for soaring effortlessly above the waves. Unlike terns, which they superficially resemble, tropicbirds have a more robust build, making them adept at long-distance travel.

A Look Like No Other

The Red-tailed Tropicbird’s plumage is a study in contrasts. Its body is adorned in a coat of dazzling white, often with a subtle pink tinge. A striking black mask, resembling a comma, extends back from the beak, framing its dark brown eyes. The true showstopper, however, are the namesake tail feathers. These vibrant red streamers can reach up to 14 inches in length, nearly double the bird’s body size! They add a dash of drama to the bird’s silhouette and aid in aerial maneuvers.

A Glimpse of Paradise

While the Red-tailed Tropicbird might not be a permanent resident of Costa Rica’s central valley, where our retreat is nestled, it graces the Pacific coast with its presence. If you’re lucky enough to spot one soaring over the turquoise waters, take a moment to appreciate this magnificent avian ambassador of the tropics.

For those yearning for a guaranteed encounter with this marvel, venturing out to Costa Rica’s coastal areas like Guanacaste or the Osa Peninsula might be an option. However, even a fleeting glimpse of this red-tailed wonder is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Keep an eye out, fellow birders! The next time you’re basking on the shores of Costa Rica, you might just be treated to a dazzling display by the Red-tailed Tropicbird.
