The rainforests of Costa Rica are home to an incredible diversity of birds. A Robust Charmer of the Understory

Unlike its namesake, the Orange-billed Sparrow is not a common sparrow. This small songbird, measuring about 14 cm, has a stockier build and prefers the shaded refuge of the forest floor. Spotting it can be a delightful surprise as it searches for insects and seeds among the lush undergrowth.

Contrasting Black and White with a Citrus Touch

The plumage of the Orange-billed Sparrow is a captivating mix of contrasting colors. Its upper parts are a beautiful olive yellow, while its head is adorned with a striking black and white mask. A black chest band separates the white throat from the grayish sides of the chest and belly. But the true star of the show is undoubtedly the bright orange bill, which seems to glow under the dim light filtering through the rainforest canopy.

A Forest Specialist

The Orange-billed Sparrow is a true inhabitant of the evergreen humid forests and edges found in the tropical lowlands. Here at our mountain retreat, you have many chances to find them in the understory thickets and shaded clearings. They are most often seen in pairs, flitting among the fallen leaves and searching for their next delicious bite.

An Inaudible Song

Unlike its noisy and boisterous sparrow relatives, the Orange-billed Sparrow is a relatively quiet bird. Its vocalizations are described as a series of soft chirps and whistles, not as noticeable as the melodious songs of other rainforest dwellers. However, its striking appearance more than makes up for its lack of vocal prowess.

A Beautiful Resident

The Orange-billed Sparrow is a resident species, meaning it does not migrate long distances. So, if you’re lucky enough to spot one during your stay at our retreat, there’s a good chance you’ll encounter it again while exploring the rainforest trails.

Caring for Paradise

The Orange-billed Sparrow is currently listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN. However, its populations are believed to be declining due to habitat loss. By protecting Costa Rica’s precious rainforests, we can ensure that future generations can continue to marvel at this little flash of orange in the heart of the rainforest.
