Welcome back, nature enthusiasts, to our exploration of the incredible avian wonders that call Costa Rica home! Today, we set our sights on a dazzling denizen of the mountain forests, the aptly named Magenta-throated Woodstar.
This tiny hummingbird, a mere 3.5 grams (0.12 oz) of pure energy, is a resident breeder in the forest edges and scrub of the Talamancan montane forests. While sightings can be rare for the casual observer, for those fortunate enough to encounter this vibrant creature, it leaves a lasting impression.
A Jewel in the Mountains
The male Magenta-throated Woodstar is an unmistakable sight. His namesake feature, a vibrant magenta throat, is separated from his green chest and flanks by a crisp white collar. His back continues the verdant theme, while his belly boasts a rufous hue. White patches adorn his rump, and his long, forked tail is tipped with black.
The female, though lacking the male’s flashy throat, is no less beautiful. Her plumage echoes the male’s green and rufous tones, but her throat is a delicate grey-buff, and the sides of her tail are a warm rufous. Immature birds resemble the females, but with a paler underside and buff fringes on their upper body feathers.
A Dance for Nectar
These mesmerizing hummers are nectarivores, deriving their energy from the sweet offerings of flowers found in herbs, trees, and shrubs. They are a common sight at forest edges, flitting from bloom to bloom with a slow, bumblebee-like flight, their long tails often cocked upwards in a captivating display.
The male woodstar puts on an even more spectacular show during courtship. He engages in a dazzling diving display flight, either alone or in loose groups, captivating potential mates with his aerial acrobatics. His song, described as a spluttering gurgle, and his calls, ranging from a dry “chi” to a territorial “chrrrrt,” complete his repertoire.
A Haven for Hummingbirds
While the Magenta-throated Woodstar has a limited range, restricted to Costa Rica and Panama, here at our mountain retreat, we are fortunate to have them as frequent visitors. Our lush gardens, bursting with a variety of flowering plants, provide the perfect pitstop for these tireless nectar collectors.
If you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, keep your eyes peeled for a flash of magenta flitting amongst the flowers. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might just be rewarded with a glimpse of this dazzling hummingbird, a true jewel of the Costa Rican mountains.
