A Flash of Emerald: The Dazzling Plain-capped Starthroat

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Emerald: The Dazzling Plain-capped Starthroat

High in the Costa Rican mountains, where the air is crisp and the cloud forests whisper secrets, flit a jewel-toned wonder – the Plain-capped Starthroat. This dazzling hummingbird, with its mesmerizing plumage and energetic spirit, is a captivating sight for any nature enthusiast lucky enough to spot it.

A Mountain Gem

The Plain-capped Starthroat belongs to the “mountain gem” tribe of hummingbirds, aptly named for their iridescent feathers that shimmer like gemstones. Measuring a mere 4.3 to 5.1 inches, these tiny dynamos are marvels of flight. Their long, almost straight, black bill allows them to probe deep into flowers, extracting nectar with their specialized brush-like tongues.

A Look to Remember

Both males and females sport a similar plumage, making them easy to identify for birdwatchers. Their crown, as the name suggests, is a plain, non-metallic green, contrasting beautifully with their metallic bronze green upperparts. A flash of white on the rump adds another touch of elegance.

But the true showstopper is the gorget – the throat patch that shimmers with vibrant shades of red. Depending on the light, it can appear fiery red, or a more subdued shade of purplish red. This vibrant patch is particularly prominent in males, further enhanced by a wide white “moustache” that extends from the base of the bill.

A Life on the Wing

Plain-capped Starthroats are solitary birds, fiercely defending their feeding territories. Their wings beat at an incredible speed, allowing them to hover in mid-air as they sip nectar from flowers. They are particularly fond of Heliconia – lobster claw plants – whose curved flowers are perfectly adapted to their long, probing bills.

A Mountain Retreat Awaits

While Plain-capped Starthroats can be found throughout the mountains of Mexico and Central America, their presence is particularly abundant in Costa Rica.
