Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we are fortunate to be surrounded by a symphony of life. Among the vibrant orchestra of birdsong, one particularly dazzling soloist takes center stage – the Purple-crowned Fairy.
This captivating hummingbird, not to be confused with the fairy-wrens of Australia, is a true marvel of the avian world. Though diminutive in size, the Purple-crowned Fairy boasts an otherworldly beauty that leaves us breathless every time it graces our gardens with its presence.
A Jewel in the Rainforest Canopy
Scientifically classified as Heliothryx barroti, the Purple-crowned Fairy belongs to the mango hummingbird subfamily, Polytminae. Found from the southeastern reaches of Mexico all the way down to northern Peru, this dazzling creature thrives in the humid embrace of tropical rainforests.
Here at our mountain retreat, we’re lucky enough to have these beauties flitting amongst the flowers at the edges of the rainforest that flanks our property. If you’re an early riser, you might even catch them closer to the central areas, where flowering shrubs and trees attract their attention.
A Dazzling Display of Feathers
The Purple-crowned Fairy lives up to its name with a breathtaking display of plumage. Males, the true stars of the show, sport a gleaming emerald green back that shimmers like a polished gemstone. This verdant splendor extends to their upperparts, creating a breathtaking contrast with their snow-white underparts.
But the crown jewel, quite literally, is the vibrant purple cap that adorns the male’s head. This striking splash of color can be subtle at times, but when the light catches it just right, it explodes with an otherworldly brilliance.
Females, though lacking the flamboyant purple crown, are no slouches in the beauty department. They share the emerald green upperparts and white underparts of the males, but their tails tend to be slightly longer.
A Life on the Wing
Purple-crowned Fairies are marvels of aerial agility. Their wings beat with a rapidity that allows them to hover mid-air, a skill they put to good use while feeding on nectar from flowering plants. Their long, slender bills are perfectly adapted for reaching deep within flowers to access the sweet sustenance within.
These fascinating creatures are not the most solitary of birds. While they maintain territories, they are not averse to sharing flowering patches with other hummingbirds. Their days are a whirlwind of activity as they flit from flower to flower, their wings a blur and their tail feathers flashing white with each beat.
A Glimpse of Paradise
If you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply someone who appreciates the breathtaking beauty of nature, then keeping an eye out for the Purple-crowned Fairy during your stay at our Costa Rican retreat is a must. Their dazzling appearance and captivating flitting flight are a true wonder to behold.
So, the next time you find yourself basking in the tranquility of our mountain retreat, keep your ears tuned for the delicate hum of wings and your eyes peeled for a flash of emerald and purple. The Purple-crowned Fairy might just reward your patience with a glimpse of its otherworldly beauty.
