A Flash of Color in the Costa Rican Sky: The Aplomado Falcon

High atop your private balcony at our mountain retreat, you raise your binoculars to a burst of movement against the cerulean canvas. Could it be a hawk? An eagle? Prepare to be dazzled, for you might be witnessing the aerial acrobatics of the Aplomado Falcon, a vibrant predator gracing the skies of Costa Rica.

The Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis) is a medium-sized falcon, boasting a slender build, long wings, and an impressive tail. While smaller than its Peregrine cousin, the Aplomado packs a punch in the personality department. This avian hunter is a kaleidoscope of colors. Picture a sleek, steel-grey back contrasting with a vibrant reddish-orange breast. Bold black markings frame the face, creating a striking ‘moustache’ effect, while a crisp white band separates it from the throat. Look for a black belly band followed by a flash of orange on the lower body, completing this feathered masterpiece.

While not as commonly spotted as some other Costa Rican birds, the Aplomado Falcon can be seen soaring through open areas, particularly along the Pacific Coast and dry lowlands. Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst lush greenery, sightings are less frequent. However, with a keen eye and a bit of patience, you might catch this magnificent falcon venturing out from the foothills in search of prey.

Speaking of prey, the Aplomado Falcon is a hunter par excellence. With lightning-fast dives and agile maneuvers, it specializes in catching birds and insects mid-air. They’ve also been known to take down small mammals and lizards on the ground, showcasing their adaptability. Keep an eye out for these falcons perched on fence posts or telephone wires, ever vigilant for their next meal.

The Aplomado Falcon’s story in Costa Rica is one of resilience. Once a common sight, their populations dwindled due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Thankfully, conservation efforts are underway, with reintroduction programs aiming to bring these beautiful birds back to their former glory.

So, the next time you’re relaxing on your balcony, enveloped by the tranquility of the Costa Rican mountains, keep an eye out for a flash of color against the sky. It might just be the Aplomado Falcon, a reminder of the vibrant tapestry of life that thrives in this incredible country.
