A Flash of Chestnut in the Canopy: The Bay-Headed Tanager

High in the lush embrace of the Costa Rican mountains, a vibrant splash of color catches your eye. It’s the Bay-headed Tanager, a stunning songbird gracing the canopy with its presence. Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the emerald tapestry of the rainforest, these little beauties are frequent visitors, adding a touch of the exotic to your tranquil escape.

The Bay-headed Tanager, with its scientific name Tangara gyrola, is a medium-sized songbird belonging to the Thraupidae family. Measuring around 14 cm in length, it’s a captivating sight. True to its name, the male Bay-headed Tanager boasts a rich chestnut crown, a vibrant contrast to its grassy-green back. This striking headgear is further accentuated by a delicate band of yellow at the nape, adding a touch of elegance. But the color show doesn’t stop there! The rump and underparts transform into a mesmerizing turquoise blue, creating a breathtaking combination. The flanks and undertail-coverts, however, remain a subtle green, tying the whole look together beautifully.

Females, while lacking the flamboyant colors of the males, are no less charming. They share the same basic plumage pattern but in a more muted palette, with their green and blue tones appearing duller. This subtle difference highlights the vibrant display of the males, making them stand out amongst the foliage.

But the Bay-headed Tanager isn’t just a pretty face (or, rather, head). These social butterflies are often seen flitting about in pairs or small family groups. They’re also quite the socialites, frequently joining mixed flocks with other tanager and honeycreeper species. Their days are filled with flitting through the forest canopy, their keen eyes searching for a delicious meal. They’re primarily frugivores, with a diet rich in various fruits and berries.

Listen closely, and you might be rewarded with the Bay-headed Tanager’s melodious song. It’s a slow and deliberate sequence of “see” notes, followed by a sharper “tsou, tsooy.” This unique call is a delightful addition to the symphony of rainforest sounds that will surround you during your stay at our retreat.

The Bay-headed Tanager, with its stunning plumage and social nature, is a true gem of the Costa Rican rainforest. Here at our mountain retreat, we take pride in offering you the opportunity to witness these captivating creatures in their natural habitat. So, pack your binoculars, grab a cup of Costa Rican coffee, and head out to explore the rainforest canopy. You might just catch a glimpse of the Bay-headed Tanager, a dazzling flash of color against the emerald backdrop, adding another unforgettable memory to your Costa Rican adventure.
