Unveiling the Plain-colored Tanager: A Study in Subtlety

Here at our Costa Rican retreat nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we take pride in sharing the wonders of our vibrant avian community. Today, we turn our gaze to a bird whose name might undersell its charm – the Plain-colored Tanager (Tangara inornata).

While it may lack the flamboyant plumage of some of its tanager cousins, the Plain-colored Tanager offers a captivating lesson in understated elegance. True to its moniker, this songbird boasts a plumage of soft, cool gray. This seemingly simple attire is accented by striking black wings that create a crisp contrast. Look closely, and you might catch a glimpse of an iridescent blue-purple patch on its shoulder – a subtle flash of brilliance that adds an unexpected touch of magic.

Despite its name, the Plain-colored Tanager isn’t one to shy away from company. These birds are often seen flitting about in pairs or small flocks, flitting through the open branches of forest edges and shrubby second-growth habitats. Here in the mountains of Costa Rica, you might encounter them during your nature walks, their presence adding a delightful melody to the symphony of the forest.

While you won’t find them flitting through the gardens of the Central Valley, the Plain-colored Tanager graces the foothills and lower mountain ranges of Costa Rica. So, if you’re venturing beyond the Central Valley and into the lush embrace of our mountains, keep your eyes peeled for these understated beauties.

Here are some tips for getting a glimpse of the Plain-colored Tanager:

  • Habitat: Look for them at forest edges and areas with shrubby second growth.
  • Time of Day: They are most active during the day, so plan your birdwatching adventures for the morning or afternoon hours.
  • Listen: Their call is a high-pitched, whistled “whee-tee” or “whee-see” that can help you locate them before you see them.
  • Patience: Birdwatching is all about patience and observation. Sit quietly and scan the branches, letting your eyes adjust to the dappled light.

The Plain-colored Tanager might not be the most visually dazzling bird in Costa Rica, but its subtle charm and delightful presence add another layer of wonder to the tapestry of life in our mountain retreat. So, the next time you’re exploring the hidden corners of our lush paradise, keep an eye out for this understated avian gem. You might just be rewarded with a glimpse of its quiet elegance.
