The White-winged Dove: A Familiar Friend in the Costa Rican Mountains

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The White-winged Dove: A Familiar Friend in the Costa Rican Mountains

Even in the tranquility of our mountain retreat, you’re likely to encounter some lively chatter. One of the most common sources of this happy noise is the White-winged Dove, a charming and easily recognizable resident of Costa Rica’s skies.

This plump dove, with its brownish-gray plumage, is a familiar sight throughout the country, from the bustling Central Valley to the lush rainforests. Look for them perched on branches, their blue eyering and red eyes adding a touch of color. But their namesake feature truly shines in flight. When the White-winged Dove takes off, the distinctive white flash along the leading edge of their wings becomes a beacon, contrasting beautifully with the darker feathers.

A Backyard Buddy

Unlike some of Costa Rica’s more reclusive birds, the White-winged Dove thrives in human-dominated landscapes. They’re frequent visitors to backyards and gardens, readily adapting to bird feeders and the general hustle and bustle of civilization. This makes them a delightful companion for guests at our mountain retreat, offering a touch of the wild right outside your cabina.

Listen to the Love Song

The White-winged Dove’s call is perhaps its most endearing characteristic. Their cooing song, often likened to the phrase “who cooks for you?” adds a gentle melody to the mountain air. This melodic call is particularly prominent during courtship displays, where the male puffs his chest feathers and struts his stuff to impress a potential mate.

A Family Affair

The White-winged Dove is a social bird, often seen in pairs or small flocks. They’re dedicated parents, working together to build a flimsy twig nest and taking turns incubating their eggs. Once hatched, both parents tirelessly feed the chicks until they fledge and become independent.

Spotting Tips

While the White-winged Dove is widespread, a little patience and practice can enhance your birdwatching experience. Here are some tips:

  • Look for them in open areas: Fields, pastures, gardens, and even the edges of forests are prime White-winged Dove territory.
  • Listen for their call: Their distinctive cooing is a great giveaway, especially in the early mornings and evenings.
  • Watch for them in flight: The flash of white on their wings is unmistakable when they take off.

With a little attentiveness, you’re sure to encounter these delightful doves during your stay at our mountain retreat. Their friendly presence and charming calls are a wonderful addition to the Costa Rican birding experience.
