High in the Costa Rican mountains, our retreat offers stunning views and an abundance of unique birdlife. But venture a little lower in altitude, and you might encounter a different kind of avian charm: the White-cheeked Pintail.
This attractive dabbling duck graces the coasts and freshwater wetlands of Costa Rica’s lowlands, particularly the Caribbean and Pacific regions. Though not as commonly spotted in the Central Valley, keep an eye out for them in lagoons, ponds, and estuaries during your Costa Rican adventure.
Recognizing the White-cheeked Pintail
These ducks are aptly named for the distinctive white patches adorning their cheeks. Both males and females are similar in size and plumage, with a rich brown chest and back. Their wings are a beautiful contrast, showcasing iridescent green and black feathers.
Look for a dark brown bill and pale yellow legs to complete the picture. White-cheeked Pintails are on the smaller side, reaching a length of around 20 inches (51 cm).
A Life on the Water
As dabbling ducks, White-cheeked Pintails spend most of their time on the water’s surface, gracefully tipping their bodies forward to feed. Their diet consists mainly of aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates they find at the water’s surface. They’ll also dabble for insects and small fish on occasion.
These lively ducks are quite social, often seen in small flocks paddling and preening together. Listen for their vocalizations – the males have a high-pitched squeak, while the females emit a short quack.
A Species that Thrives
The good news for birdwatchers is that the White-cheeked Pintail is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN. Their populations seem stable, with a healthy range spanning the Caribbean, South America, and even the Galapagos Islands.
