The Roadside Hawk: A Perched Resident of the Costa Rican Countryside

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Roadside Hawk: A Perched Resident of the Costa Rican Countryside

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the emerald embrace of the rainforest meets the crisp kiss of the cloud forest, you might expect to find only the most exotic and elusive birds. But venture out onto a dusty backroad, its gravel crunching beneath your feet, and you’re likely to encounter a resident far more comfortable with wide-open spaces – the aptly named Roadside Hawk.

This tenacious raptor isn’t one to shy away from civilization. In fact, it thrives along roadsides, forest edges, and pastures, keeping a watchful eye on the world from its perch atop fence posts, power lines, or even the occasional bewildered cow.

A Vocal and Variable Beauty

The Roadside Hawk is a medium-sized bird of prey, typically reaching a length of 12-16 inches. Don’t be fooled by its common name – its plumage variations are anything but uniform! Depending on the subspecies, you might spot a Roadside Hawk with a cool grey head or a warmer brown, both offset by a rufous tinge on the wings that becomes a fiery flash during flight.

A constant chatterbox, the Roadside Hawk’s piercing calls are a familiar sound in the Costa Rican countryside. Its sharp yellow eyes scan the landscape for prey, which primarily consists of insects, small reptiles, and rodents. With a quick burst of powerful wings, the hawk swoops down to snatch its unsuspecting meal, a testament to its efficient hunting prowess.

A Busy Life in the Open Air

Unlike its forest-dwelling cousins, the Roadside Hawk prefers a life bathed in sunshine. It’s not uncommon to see this bold bird perched prominently on a roadside sign, seemingly unfazed by the passing traffic. This confident demeanor even extends to nesting, with the Roadside Hawk constructing its stick nest high in trees along the edges of fields and pastures.

A Fortunate Encounter

While not the rarest bird you’ll find in Costa Rica, a sighting of the Roadside Hawk is a delightful reminder of the biodiversity that thrives even in unexpected places. So, on your next Costa Rican adventure, keep an eye out for this feathered sentinel of the open spaces. You might just find yourself sharing the road – and the breathtaking view – with this captivating raptor.

Spotting Tips:

  • Look for the Roadside Hawk perched on fence posts, power lines, or tall trees along roadsides and pastures.
  • Listen for its loud, piercing calls.
  • Observe its characteristic broad-winged flight with quick, stiff wingbeats.

Happy birding!
