The Eurasian Collared-Dove: An Unexpected Guest in the Costa Rican Mountains

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Eurasian Collared-Dove: An Unexpected Guest in the Costa Rican Mountains

Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we revel in the symphony of birdsong that fills the air each morning. But amidst the chorus of familiar tropical melodies, you might occasionally hear a cooing call that sounds a bit…off-key. That, my friends, is likely the Eurasian Collared-Dove, a fascinating visitor with a surprising story.

While the name suggests European origins (and it’s true, they’re native to Eurasia and Africa), the Eurasian Collared-Dove is an adaptable adventurer. Introduced to the Bahamas in the 1970s, they quickly spread across North America, and their enterprising spirit eventually led them to Costa Rica.

These doves are undeniably charming. Imagine a plump bird with a pale, almost frosty brown body, accented by a crisp black crescent moon on the back of their neck – their namesake collar. Longish tails tipped with flashes of white add a touch of elegance, and their dark-tipped wings create a flurry of movement as they flit between trees and fences.

Unlike some shyer birds, the Eurasian Collared-Dove is quite comfortable in human-altered landscapes. So, you might spot them perched on our lodge balconies, cooing their rhythmic three-part song. Don’t be surprised if you see them in pairs – they’re known for their strong pair bonds.

Here’s a fun fact: Eurasian Collared-Doves are one of the few bird species that can drink with their heads completely submerged, slurping up water like a straw! They’re also resourceful eaters, enjoying a diet of seeds, fruits, and even the occasional insect.

While the Eurasian Collared-Dove might not be a native Costa Rican, their presence adds a touch of unexpected wonder to our mountain retreat. They’re a reminder that nature is constantly adapting, and even in the heart of the tropics, you can find fascinating surprises.

So, the next time you hear an unfamiliar coo, keep your eyes peeled. You might just spot this enterprising dove, a feathered globetrotter making itself at home in the Costa Rican mountains.
