The Eared Dove: A Graceful Guest at Your Mountain Retreat

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Eared Dove: A Graceful Guest at Your Mountain Retreat

As you rise with the sun here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, a gentle cooing might greet you from the blossoming trees outside your window. This melodic call belongs to the Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata), a common and delightful resident gracing the skies and woodlands throughout the country.

While not exclusive to the mountains, the Eared Dove thrives in our diverse ecosystem. Let’s delve into the fascinating world of this adaptable and beautiful bird.

A Look and Listen

The Eared Dove is a small to medium-sized dove, reaching about 24 cm (9.4 in) in length. Its plumage is a stunning combination of olive-brown upperparts, creating a beautiful camouflage against the leaves. Look closely, and you’ll see black spots adorning the wings, adding a touch of contrast.

The namesake feature of this dove is undoubtedly its head. A crisp grey crown sits atop a rosy forehead and throat, with a striking black line framing the eye. But the true stars of the show are the blue-black patches on the lower ear coverts – these “ear” markings give the bird its name and add a touch of elegance to its profile.

The underparts of the Eared Dove are a warm vinous color, contrasting beautifully with the olive-brown back. The tail feathers boast a charming cinnamon tip, adding a final touch of charm to this feathered friend.

The Eared Dove’s call is a distinctive coo, a soft “cooo-COOO-cooo” that carries through the air. It’s a peaceful sound, a calming melody that blends perfectly with the tranquility of our mountain retreat.

Habitat and Habits

The Eared Dove is an adaptable bird, at home in a variety of habitats. You’ll find them in our mountain forests, but they also thrive in open fields, scrublands, agricultural areas, and even urban parks. This versatility makes them one of the most widespread doves in South America, extending their range from Colombia all the way to southern Argentina and Chile.

Eared Doves are primarily ground feeders, diligently searching for seeds, fruits, and insects on the forest floor or in low vegetation. They’re often seen in pairs, foraging together and maintaining a strong bond. Breeding season brings a flurry of activity, with the doves constructing a simple platform nest in trees and raising a single brood of chicks.

A Spot of Serenity

The Eared Dove is a welcome sight and sound at our mountain retreat. Their gentle cooing adds to the peaceful ambiance, while their graceful flight patterns are a joy to observe. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a pair perched on a nearby branch, their iridescent feathers catching the morning sunlight.

Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply appreciate the beauty of nature, the Eared Dove is sure to leave a lasting impression. As you explore the trails and soak in the serenity of our mountain retreat, keep an ear out for their calming call and an eye out for their elegant form. The Eared Dove is a cherished resident, a feathered ambassador for the tranquility you’ll find here in the heart of Costa Rica.
