Deep within the verdant embrace of our Costa Rican mountain retreat, a symphony of birdsong fills the air. But amidst the vibrant melodies, there exists a more subtle vocalist, a master of camouflage: the Slaty-breasted Tinamou (Crypturellus boucardi).
This shy and elusive bird is a true resident of the rainforest canopy. Although rarely seen, its haunting calls echo through the trees, a melancholic serenade that can be heard for hours, especially at dawn and dusk.
A Glimpse into the Secretive World
The Slaty-breasted Tinamou is a compact bird, reaching only about 27 cm (11 inches) in length. Its plumage reflects the dappled light of the forest floor – a tapestry of black to chestnut on the head and back, rich brown wings, and a namesake slaty-grey breast. A flash of white graces its throat, while the underparts are a canvas of grey-brown adorned with darker barring on the flanks and undertail.
Females stand out with distinct barring on their wings, a subtle difference that adds another layer of intrigue to this already cryptic species. Keen observers might also catch a glimpse of their bright pink to red legs, a vibrant pop of color against the forest shadows.
A Master of Forest Foraging
Despite their terrestrial nature, Slaty-breasted Tinamous are surprisingly adept at navigating the rainforest canopy. They follow mixed-species flocks, flitting amongst the leaves in search of a delicious meal. Their diet consists primarily of insects, which they glean from dead twigs and vines. They’ll even showcase impressive acrobatics, briefly climbing larger branches to probe the bark for hidden treats.
A Song Unmistakable
While sightings of the Slaty-breasted Tinamou are rare, their presence is undeniable thanks to their distinctive song. Imagine a series of 4-6 high-pitched notes, slowly descending in pitch at the end. The melody itself is forceful, yet carries a thin quality that can be easily overlooked by the untrained ear.
But here at our mountain retreat, with the guidance of our experienced naturalists, you’ll learn to differentiate this song from similar calls. You might even confuse it with the Streaked Xenops of the Amazon, but a closer listen will reveal the Slaty-breasted Tinamou’s slower tempo.
A Shy Gem of the Rainforest
The Slaty-breasted Tinamou is a reminder that true beauty often lies in the hidden corners of the natural world. With a little patience and a keen ear, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this feathered wonder flitting through the trees. And even if you don’t, their haunting song will stay with you, a testament to the hidden wonders that grace our Costa Rican paradise.
