Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the lush greenery of Costa Rica, we’re surrounded by a symphony of birdsong. From the vibrant calls of toucans to the melodic whistles of wrens, our haven is a paradise for birdwatchers. Today, we turn our binoculars to a more subtle resident, the aptly named White-tipped Dove.
The White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) is a plump, pale, and somewhat shy member of the dove family. Unlike its flamboyant relatives, the White-tipped Dove boasts a more subdued elegance. Its feathers are a soft, dusty rose with a hint of gray on the head and chest. The namesake white tips on its outer tail feathers are the key identification feature, although you might need a good look to appreciate them.
These doves are widespread throughout Central and South America, with their range extending from Texas all the way down to Argentina. In Costa Rica, you’ll find them gracing the foothills and mountains, favoring open areas with scattered trees and shrubs. While they might occasionally visit bird feeders, they are generally ground-dwellers, preferring to forage for seeds and fallen fruits on the forest floor.
Habitat:
The White-tipped Dove thrives in a variety of wooded habitats. They are particularly fond of disturbed or scrubby areas, which is why you’re more likely to encounter them near our mountain retreat than in the heart of the rainforest. However, don’t be surprised if you spot them flitting through the undergrowth of a mature forest as well.
Seeing a White-tipped Dove:
Due to their preference for the ground and their shy nature, spotting a White-tipped Dove can be a challenge. They tend to stay hidden in the undergrowth, only flushing out into the open if startled. But their soft cooing call, a low-pitched “whoo-whoo-whoo,” can sometimes betray their presence.
Tips for Birdwatchers:
If you’re determined to see a White-tipped Dove during your stay at our retreat, here are a few tips:
- Early mornings and late afternoons: These doves are most active during these times, so plan your birdwatching walks accordingly.
- Listen for the call: Keep your ears perked for their low cooing call, which can help you locate them.
- Scan the forest floor: Since they spend most of their time on the ground, focus your gaze on the undergrowth near clearings and edges of the forest.
- Patience is key: As with any wildlife sighting, patience is crucial. Stay quiet, observe calmly, and avoid making any sudden movements that might spook the doves.
A Glimpse of Serenity:
While not as flashy as some of Costa Rica’s other birds, the White-tipped Dove offers a different kind of beauty. Their quiet presence and gentle cooing add to the peaceful atmosphere of our mountain retreat. With a little patience and these handy tips, you might just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this elusive dove during your stay.
