High above the emerald green embrace of our mountain retreat in Costa Rica, a symphony of wings takes flight. Among the vibrant tapestry of birds that make our paradise their home, the Costa Rican Swift (Chaetura fumosa) performs a graceful dance through the air. These elegant and agile birds are a captivating sight, their presence a constant reminder of the dynamic life thriving in the canopy of the tropical forest.

A Master of the Sky

The Costa Rican Swift is a true avian acrobat. With a wingspan that can reach 28 centimeters (11 inches) and a slender, aerodynamic body, it is perfectly adapted for a life dedicated to gliding. Its sooty black feathers shine with a subtle blue sheen, a fascinating contrast to the emerald expanse of the rainforest.

A distinctive feature of the Costa Rican Swift is its contrasting pale rump. This patch of grayish-white feathers, often difficult to see from afar, is a key identification element for bird watchers. Its throat and chest also display a touch of pale gray, adding a touch of elegance to its otherwise dark plumage.

A Life Dedicated to Flight

Unlike many birds, the Costa Rican Swift spends most of its life in the air. With specially adapted legs that allow it to cling vertically to surfaces, it perches and nests high up, within tree holes. Its powerful wings propel it effortlessly through the air, allowing it to cover vast distances in search of flying insects, its main food source.

These agile hunters are often observed in groups of 5 to 10 individuals, fluttering and darting at incredible speeds as they catch insects in mid-flight. During the non-breeding season, these groups can reach impressive numbers, with up to 50 swifts swirling together in a fascinating aerial ballet.

Sharing the Sky

The Costa Rican Swift is not a loner. It often shares the sky with other small swifts, such as the Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift, the Rufous-tailed Swift, and, why not, the Vaux’s Swift in areas where their ranges overlap. These mixed flocks offer a dynamic spectacle, a testament to the spirit of cooperation that can exist in the bird world.

A Glimpse into the Tropical Forest Canopy

Spotting a Costa Rican Swift can be a rewarding experience for bird watchers visiting our retreat. While its dark plumage may make it difficult to spot against the lush foliage, its rapid and erratic flight patterns often give it away. If you are patient and keep your eyes fixed on the higher levels of the tropical forest canopy, you may be lucky enough to witness these masters of the air in action.

The Costa Rican Swift is a reminder of the hidden wonders residing in the tropical forest ecosystem. Its grace, agility, and dedication to flight are a testament to the remarkable adaptations that allow life to thrive in this complex and ever-changing environment. As you explore the trails and walkways of our mountain retreat, don’t forget to look up: you might catch a glimpse of these captivating birds soaring through the Costa Rican sky.
