The Costa Rican rainforest is a symphony of sounds and sights. From the loud calls of the Scarlet Macaw to the melodic whistles of the Yellow-naped Amazon, there is always a feathered friend serenading you on your explorations. But hidden among the dense foliage thrives a more reserved resident: the enigmatic Slate-throated Redstart.

This passerine bird, belonging to the Furnariidae family, is a master of camouflage. Its plumage is a beautiful blend of slate gray, with a touch of rufous on the crown and folded wings. This coloration allows it to blend perfectly with the tangled underbrush, and its presence is often only revealed by its distinctive song.
A Voice in the Thicket
If you are lucky enough to spot a Slate-throated Redstart, it will likely be moving through the dense vegetation at the forest edge, in secondary forests, or in riparian thickets. Here, in our Costa Rican refuge nestled in the mountains, sightings are more common, thanks to the abundant undergrowth that provides them with shelter and hunting grounds.
While glimpses of this bird may be fleeting, its voice is unmistakable. Listen for a low, stuttering chatter, a series of “chu-chu-chrrrr” sounds emanating from the depths of the thicket. This persistent call is its way of communicating with other Slate-throated Redstarts, a secret language carried by the tropical breeze.
A Less Ordinary Life
Unlike its Furnariidae relatives known for their elaborate mud nests, the Slate-throated Redstart takes a more traditional approach. They build bulky, spherical stick nests, often 36×43 cm, with a long, tubular entrance. These impressive structures can be found high in a shrub or vine-covered tree, offering a safe haven for their clutch of two or three greenish-white eggs.
A Bird of the Lower Levels
The Slate-throated Redstart is primarily a creature of the underbrush, rarely venturing above the dense vegetation. Here, in our mountain refuge, with its lush rainforest teeming with life, you are more likely to encounter this bird at lower elevations, generally below 1200 meters.
A Glimpse into the Hidden World
While the Slate-throated Redstart may not be the most striking bird in Costa Rica, its reserved nature and unique habitat make it a fascinating resident of our mountain refuge. If you keep your eyes peeled and listen closely, you might catch a glimpse of this elusive bird slipping through the underbrush, its presence a reminder of the hidden wonders residing in the Costa Rican rainforest.
