As the last rays of the Costa Rican sun disappear behind the mountains, a symphony of crickets fills the air. This marks the beginning of the night shift for a fascinating aerial predator: the Migratory Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor). Here, in our mountain retreat nestled among whispering pines, these acrobatic birds are a common sight against the twilight canvas.

The Migratory Nighthawk is a medium-sized insectivorous marvel. Its cryptic plumage—a beautiful blend of grays, browns, and blacks with intricate patterns—makes it almost invisible as it perches on a branch during the day. But as night falls, they take to the skies, transforming into mesmerizing dancers.
A Master of the Night Sky
Its flight is unlike any other bird. Imagine a giant boomerang, with wings in a shallow V shape, punctuated by bursts of rapid flapping followed by graceful glides. This erratic and acrobatic style allows it to maneuver quickly, catching flying insects in the air with its wide frog-like mouth.
Watch them skimming the treetops or soaring high in the sky, their dark forms silhouetted against the twilight sky. Their large eyes, positioned forward on the head, provide them with exceptional night vision, perfect for hunting even the smallest flying prey.
A Song in the Darkness
While their sight is impressive, their calls are equally captivating. Males have a unique buzzing trill that they project during their aerial displays. It is a sound both otherworldly and strangely beautiful, adding another layer of magic to the night.
A World Traveler with Local Ties
The Migratory Nighthawk is a phenomenal traveler. These birds breed throughout North America and migrate south to spend their winters in Central and South America. Here in Costa Rica, a subspecies—the C. m. panamensis—finds refuge in the mountains and along the Pacific slopes.
Observing These Night Flyers
While they may not be brightly colored songbirds, the Migratory Nighthawk offers a different birdwatching experience. Head to our outdoor terrace at sunset, listen to their calls, and watch their distinctive silhouette against the darkening sky. You might even see them drawn to the lights around the retreat, putting on an aerial show as they catch insects.
A Reminder of the Beauty of the Night
The Migratory Nighthawk is a testament to the wonders that unfold after dark. Their presence reminds us to slow down, appreciate the changing light, and listen to the nocturnal symphony around us. So, the next time you find yourself at our mountain retreat, keep your eyes peeled for these masters of the night sky. They might just be the highlight of your stargazing experience.
