Costa Rica’s Birdwatching Paradise
Reconnect with nature, spot rare species, and wake up each morning to the sound of birdsong. Nestled in the lush highlands near Turrialba, Hotel Rivel is uniquely positioned to give you a front-row seat to Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity.
With open valleys, deep forest trails, and riverbanks alive with color and sound, this is the kind of place where amateurs and seasoned birders alike find something new around every bend. Whether you’re here to fill your eBird checklist or simply listen to the canopy come alive, you’ll find the space and quiet you need.
Why Birdwatchers Love This Place
Our retreat sits at about 1,000 meters above sea level, which means mild temperatures year-round — ideal for early mornings and long days outdoors. The land’s deep valley and wide-open spaces create a natural amphitheater for birdsong and sightings.
Guests regularly log their discoveries on eBird.org — a testament to the incredible range of species that call this jungle home. Some of the rarest birds in Costa Rica have been spotted right here, and our local team is always ready to share a tip on where to look next.
Trails and Habitats to Explore
Birding here is as peaceful or adventurous as you’d like. Wander through different habitats, each alive with color and calls:
- Forest paths for early morning sightings of toucans, tanagers, and hummingbirds
- Riverbanks where you can listen for elusive kingfishers and catch glimpses of herons
- Open valleys and lookouts that give you panoramic views and the chance to spot raptors soaring above the canopy
No strict schedules or big crowds; just you, your binoculars, and time to wait for that perfect photo at this Costa Rica birdwatching paradise.
A Place to Rest and Listen
After a morning of sightings, come back to a cozy cabin or glamping dome surrounded by nature. Here’s what you’ll enjoy:
- Comfortable beds, fresh linens, and forest views from your porch
- Reliable Wi-Fi if you want to log sightings on eBird or share photos with friends

Wake up early with a cup of estate-grown coffee and step outside to catch the mist lifting off the hills, you’ll hear birdsong long before you see the sun.
Fresh Meals & Warm Hospitality
Birdwatching here isn’t just about the trails — it’s about feeling at home in nature, too. Each day begins with fresh local produce, free-range eggs, and coffee grown right here on the property.
Our full-service indoor and outdoor restaurant serves hearty, simple meals to keep you energized for dawn walks and long afternoons by the river. When you’re ready to unwind, our team is always nearby to share a story, help plan your next hike, or simply make sure you have everything you need.
Keep in mind that our all-inclusive dining is available by request only. It’s not included by default for every guest, but breakfast always is. If you’d like all meals covered during your stay, simply share your preference with us when you book.
The Small Details Birders Appreciate
It’s the little things that make a birding getaway special. Guests love logging sightings on eBird before breakfast, while the morning mist still hangs over the canopy.
Take a moment to listen for calls by the Tuis River, or spot a curious sloth or troop of monkeys on your way back to your cabin. With no big tour groups and no rigid schedules, you’ll always have the time and space to wait for that rare glimpse.
At night, you can share your checklist over dinner, or simply fall asleep to the hush of the forest and the river close by.
How to Get Here
We’re located about 25 minutes from Turrialba, Costa Rica, in the lush central highlands. Many guests arrive via San José International Airport and take the scenic two-hour drive through mountain roads and coffee country to reach us.
The last stretch is partly unpaved; a 4×4 is helpful for extra comfort but not required. If you’d rather not drive, our team can help arrange a private shuttle or taxi pick-up and drop-off.
What to Bring
To get the most out of your stay at this Costa Rica birdwatching paradise, pack your favorite binoculars, camera gear, and a field guide if you have one. Light hiking shoes, a rain jacket for misty mornings, and comfortable clothes will keep you ready for early starts and quiet afternoons by the water.
Time to Unplug, Time to Connect
A birding retreat here is more than just checking species off a list — it’s your chance to slow down and reconnect with what really matters. With open trails, fresh mountain air, and the gentle sounds of the river, you’ll feel the noise of everyday life fade away.
Take your morning coffee out onto the trail. Sit by the edge of the forest with your binoculars in hand. Notice the way the mist lifts off the valley, bringing birdsong to every corner of our retreat.
Some guests spend hours waiting for that one perfect sighting. Others wander between natural pools and waterfalls, letting each new call or flutter of wings lead them forward. However you like to birdwatch — alone, with family, or sharing the joy with new friends — you’ll find the time and space here to do it your way.
