While our mountain retreat offers stunning vistas and lush rainforests, it might surprise you to learn that we also get occasional visitors from wetland habitats. One such visitor is the Black-necked Stilt, a graceful shorebird with a touch of pink that can sometimes be spotted in our ponds and pools.
A Striking Appearance
The Black-necked Stilt is a real head-turner. Its plumage is a sharp contrast of black and white. The back, wings, and head are a glossy black, while the underparts and a broad band across the forehead are a bright white. But the most striking feature is undoubtedly its legs. These incredibly long appendages are a vibrant pink, adding a pop of color that makes the bird instantly recognizable.
More Than Just Pretty Legs
Those long pink legs aren’t just for show. They’re perfectly adapted for the Black-necked Stilt’s preferred feeding grounds: shallow water and mudflats. By wading through these areas, the stilt uses its long legs to probe and pick at the water and mud, searching for its prey. Their diet consists mainly of aquatic invertebrates like shrimp, worms, and insects, as well as small fish and tadpoles.
Not Just a Coastal Bird
While Black-necked Stilts are often associated with coasts, they’re actually quite adaptable. They can be found in a variety of wetland habitats, including lakes, ponds, salt flats, and even flooded fields. This means that even though our retreat is nestled in the mountains, we can sometimes be lucky enough to spot these elegant birds visiting our man-made ponds.
A Glimpse into the Wider World
The occasional visit by a Black-necked Stilt is a delightful reminder of the interconnectedness of Costa Rica’s ecosystems. Even in the heart of the mountains, we can encounter birds that typically inhabit coastal regions. It’s a chance to witness the diversity of birdlife that Costa Rica has to offer, and a reason to appreciate the importance of preserving all habitats, from mountaintops to coastlines.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled
While not the most common visitor, the Black-necked Stilt is a delightful sight to behold. So, next time you’re relaxing by the pond at our retreat, keep your eyes peeled. You might just spot this stunning shorebird with its touch of pink, adding a touch of the coast to our mountain paradise.
