High in the Costa Rican mountains, where the air is crisp and the views are endless, you might just spot a little gem – the Plain-breasted Ground Dove. Don’t let the unassuming name fool you, this tiny bird is a wonder to behold.
A Feathered Friend in the Grasslands
The Plain-breasted Ground Dove, with its scientific name Columbina minuta, is a true ground specialist. Unlike its flashier, tree-dwelling cousins, this little dove prefers the open spaces of savannas, grasslands, and pastures. It’s particularly fond of areas with scattered bushes and low-growing vegetation, making our mountain retreat a perfect spot to find them.
Small But Perfectly Formed
At just 14-16 centimeters (5.5-6.5 inches) long, the Plain-breasted Ground Dove is a contender for the title of smallest pigeon or dove by weight. It’s a delicate bird, with a light build and a wingspan that barely reaches 30 centimeters (12 inches). But don’t be fooled by its size – this dove is perfectly adapted to its ground-dwelling lifestyle.
Subtlety is Key
The Plain-breasted Ground Dove’s plumage reflects its preference for staying hidden. Both males and females are clad in a palette of grayish-brown, with a subtle rufous tinge to the underparts. The most striking feature, though often difficult to see, is a patch of iridescent purple feathers on the back. These feathers shimmer with a violet hue when the light catches them just right, adding a touch of hidden beauty.
Look for the Signs
While spotting the Plain-breasted Ground Dove can be a challenge due to its small size and muted colors, there are ways to increase your chances. Keep an eye on the ground, particularly near edges of fields and clearings, where they forage for seeds and fallen fruits. Their short, fluttering flights are another giveaway, as they flit between patches of cover.
Listen for the Soft Coo
The Plain-breasted Ground Dove’s call is a soft, mournful coo, often described as “who-who-who.” It’s not a loud or flashy sound, but it can be a helpful clue to their presence if you know what to listen for.
A Tiny Treasure to Observe
The Plain-breasted Ground Dove might not be the most flamboyant bird in Costa Rica, but its subtle beauty and secretive nature make it a rewarding discovery. As you explore the mountain trails and meadows around our retreat, keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned. With a little patience, you might just be lucky enough to encounter this tiny treasure of the grasslands.
