A Striking Contrast: The Black-and-White Becard

High in the canopy, a flash of black and white catches your eye. It’s the Black-and-white Becard, a stunning resident gracing the mountain forests surrounding our Costa Rican retreat. This aptly named bird is a true spectacle, and with a bit of patience, you might be lucky enough to spot one during your stay.

A Bird of Bold Contrasts

The Black-and-white Becard (Pachyramphus albogriseus) is a medium-sized songbird, typically measuring around six inches in length. As the name suggests, its plumage is a striking combination of black and white. Males are adorned in a crisp black cap and back, contrasting beautifully with their snowy white underparts. Females share the same black cap, but their bodies are a softer gray, making them slightly less conspicuous amongst the leaves.

A Life in the Trees

Black-and-white Becards are at home in the middle and upper levels of the rainforest canopy. They prefer areas with a healthy mix of mature trees and secondary growth, making the lush forests surrounding our retreat the perfect habitat. These active birds flit through the branches, searching for insects, spiders, and small fruits to fuel their energetic lifestyle.

A Melodious Resident

While not the most flamboyant songbird in the rainforest, the Black-and-white Becard has a vocal repertoire worth noting. Their song is a series of short, whistled notes, often described as a high-pitched “whee-oh” or “whee-tee-doo.” They are also known to incorporate clicks and rattles into their calls, creating a unique and interesting soundscape within the forest.

A Glimpse of Black and White Magic

If you’re venturing out on a hike through the mountains or relaxing on your private balcony, keep an eye out for the Black-and-white Becard. Their contrasting plumage makes them relatively easy to spot amongst the greenery, but their quick movements can be a challenge. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might be rewarded with a sighting of this beautiful bird flitting through the trees.

Beyond the Mountains: A Widespread Resident

While the Black-and-white Becard is a common sight in the mountain forests, its range extends throughout Costa Rica. These birds can also be found in the drier forests of the Central Valley region, making them a potential sighting for birdwatchers across the country.
