As you wander the forest paths of our mountain retreat, a flash of electric blue might catch your eye. This isn’t a hallucination brought on by the fresh mountain air; it’s the dazzling beauty of the Blue Ground Dove, a common resident gracing the edges of Costa Rica’s humid forests.
A Tale of Two Colors
The Blue Ground Dove (Claravis pretiosa) is a sight to behold. Males are adorned in a breathtaking coat of iridescent powder blue, making them the rockstars of the dove world. This vibrant plumage extends from their crown all the way down to their tail, with only a hint of chestnut peeking through on their underparts. Females, while lacking the male’s dazzling blue, are no slouches in the beauty department. They sport a warm, rich brown body with a distinctive rusty rump and a long, rusty tail.
A Life on the Ground (Mostly)
Despite their name, Blue Ground Doves aren’t exclusively found on the ground. They’re comfortable perching on low branches or foraging for seeds and fallen fruits on the forest floor. They’ll also take flight in a burst of rapid wingbeats, often flying high above the treetops, especially when traveling in pairs or small groups.
A Song of the Mountains
While not known for elaborate songs, the Blue Ground Dove does have a distinct vocalization. Males, particularly during breeding season, will call out a continuous, drawn-out “coo” that echoes through the mountain air. It’s a simple melody, but one that adds to the peaceful ambiance of the forest.
A Species at Home
The good news for birdwatchers is that the Blue Ground Dove is a widespread and common species. They can be found throughout the humid lowlands of the Americas, from southeastern Mexico all the way down to northern Argentina. In Costa Rica, they’re particularly at home in the foothills and mountains, making them a frequent visitor to our mountain retreat.

The Blue Ground Dove, with its stunning plumage and preference for forest edges, makes it a prime target for birdwatchers visiting our retreat.
