A Spark of Turquoise in the Highlands: The Dazzling Spangle-Cheeked Tanager

As you venture deeper into the emerald embrace of Costa Rica’s mountains, the symphony of birdsong takes on a new melody. Here, amongst the epiphyte-laden boughs of the cloud forest, flits a jewel of a bird – the Spangle-Cheeked Tanager.

This little wonder, endemic to the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama, is a captivating sight. Unlike its close relative, the Green-Naped Tanager, the Spangle-Cheeked boasts a truly unique plumage.

A Kaleidoscope of Color

Imagine a bird dipped in an artist’s palette. The Spangle-Cheeked Tanager is a masterpiece of contrasting colors. Its head, upperparts, and breast are a sleek black, offset by an electrifying splash of cobalt blue that scales its breast, flanks, and neck. A secretive patch of rufous crowns its head, adding a touch of warmth.

But the true stars of the show are the spangles – iridescent turquoise flecks that adorn its cheeks, nape, and even the edges of its wings and tail. As this little acrobat flits through the dappled sunlight, these spangles catch the light, transforming it into a fleeting display of turquoise brilliance.

A Forest Dweller

The Spangle-Cheeked Tanager is a creature of the highlands, preferring the cool embrace of cloud forests between 1,200 and 3,000 meters above sea level. Here, it thrives in the dense canopy, flitting amongst the branches adorned with bromeliads and other epiphytes. It’s not uncommon to spot them in semi-open areas as well, like clearings with trees, second growth forests, and even along woodland edges.

A Social Butterfly (Almost)

While not quite forming large flocks, Spangle-Cheeked Tanagers are often seen in pairs, flitting through the forest alongside mixed feeding groups. These groups, composed of various bird species, work together to efficiently glean insects and fruit from the trees.

The Spangle-Cheeked Tanager, however, is primarily a fruit eater. Its diet consists of a variety of berries and small fruits found within the forest canopy.
