A Jewel in the Mountains: The Enchanting Crowned Woodnymph

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Jewel in the Mountains: The Enchanting Crowned Woodnymph

High in the Costa Rican mountains, where the emerald embrace of the rainforest meets the crisp kiss of the cloud forest, flits a dazzling gem – the crowned woodnymph. This tiny hummingbird, a resident of our mountain retreat, isn’t just a visitor to our gardens; it’s a glittering resident, adding a touch of magic to every day.

For those lucky enough to catch a glimpse, the crowned woodnymph is a sight to behold. The males, slightly larger than the females, are crowned with a dazzling violet that seems to shift and shimmer with every flicker of their wings. This crown of violet extends to their upper back and belly, creating a dazzling contrast with their glittering green throat and chest. Their deeply forked tail, a sleek blue-black, adds a touch of elegance to their frenetic flight.

The females, while lacking the male’s flamboyant crown, are no less beautiful. Their bodies are a vibrant green above, transitioning to a soft, duller green below. Their throats and chests are a pale gray, contrasting with a darker belly. Their tails echo the males’, blue-black with a touch of white at the tips, adding a touch of whimsy.

But the beauty of the crowned woodnymph goes beyond its appearance. These tiny dynamos are marvels of flight. Their wings beat with incredible speed, allowing them to hover in mid-air, a blur of iridescent color as they sip nectar from flowers. Their agility is unmatched, flitting from blossom to blossom with a grace that belies their frenetic speed.

If you’re fortunate enough to spot a crowned woodnymph at our mountain retreat, take a moment to appreciate this wonder of nature. Watch as it hovers, a tiny helicopter refuelling, its iridescent feathers catching the sunlight. Listen to its high-pitched chirp, a delicate melody echoing through the mountain air. The crowned woodnymph is a reminder of the beauty and vitality that thrives in the Costa Rican mountains, a tiny jewel waiting to be discovered by those who seek it.

Tips for spotting a crowned woodnymph:

  • Keep an eye out near flowering plants, especially those with red or orange flowers, which they favor.
  • The mountain retreat gardens are a great place to start your search, with their abundance of colorful blooms.
  • Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times to see hummingbirds feeding.
  • Be patient and still. Hummingbirds are skittish, and sudden movements will scare them away.

With a little patience and a keen eye, you might just be rewarded with a glimpse of this dazzling mountain resident. The crowned woodnymph is a true treasure of the Costa Rican highlands, and a delightful addition to the wonders you can experience at our mountain retreat.
