High in the lush rainforests surrounding our Costa Rican retreat, a secretive gem flits amongst the undergrowth. The Tawny-faced Quail, a shy ground dweller, might be easily missed by the untrained eye. But for those with a keen ear and a patient spirit, this little wonder can be a delightful discovery.
A Technicolor Treat
Standing at a petite 17-20 centimeters, the Tawny-faced Quail packs a punch in the plumage department. The male is a sight to behold, with a vibrant reddish-orange face that contrasts sharply with a black streak through the eye. His crown and hindneck are a rich dark brown, giving way to a gray or brownish back streaked with black. The throat and upper breast are a distinguished gray, transitioning into a warm tawny buff on the underparts.
The female Tawny-faced Quail is no wallflower herself. While sporting a browner overall palette, she still boasts a beautiful crown and back in dark brown. Her rump is a captivating mosaic of brown and chestnut, adding a touch of whimsy to her attire.
A Life on the Forest Floor
The Tawny-faced Quail prefers to keep its feet firmly on the ground, inhabiting the lowland tropical forests of Costa Rica and neighboring countries. Here, at our mountain retreat, you might encounter them amidst the leafy tapestry of the rainforest floor, up to an elevation of around 1450 meters.
While primarily terrestrial, these little birds aren’t afraid of heights when it comes to bedtime. Come nightfall, they roost in the safety of trees and bushes, tucked away near the ground for a peaceful slumber.
A Song Unheard?
Spotting a Tawny-faced Quail can be a challenge, as they are naturally shy and adept at camouflage. But fear not, bird enthusiasts! These elusive creatures have a tell-tale call – a repeated, plaintive whistle that pierces the rainforest air. With a little patience and a good ear, you might just be able to pinpoint their location and catch a glimpse of their vibrant plumage.
A Rare Encounter, a Lasting Memory
The Tawny-faced Quail is a treasure of the Costa Rican rainforest. While not as common as some of their avian neighbors, a chance encounter with this little wonder is sure to be a highlight of your retreat experience. So, keep your eyes peeled (and ears tuned) as you explore the verdant depths of the rainforest – you never know when a flash of tawny might make your day.
