Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we’re surrounded by a symphony of life. Among the vibrant orchestra of birdsong, the Blue-throated Goldentail hummingbird plays a particularly dazzling tune.
This tiny jewel, also known as the Blue-throated Sapphire, is a breathtaking sight. While both males and females boast greenish-gold tails (which often appear grayish in certain light), the males are the true stars of the show.
A Dazzling Display of Feathers
The male Blue-throated Goldentail is a feathered kaleidoscope. His crown and back shimmer with an iridescent emerald sheen. His throat, the namesake of the bird, is a patch of dazzling violet that seems to catch the sunlight and transform into a miniature sapphire.
This vibrant gorget (throat patch) is further accentuated by a bright red, slightly down-curved bill. It’s a color combination that is both elegant and striking, a true testament to nature’s artistry.
Females: Subtle Sophistication
The females, while lacking the male’s flamboyant gorget, are no less beautiful. They have a more subdued coloration, with a greenish-bronze back and a hint of violet speckling on the throat. This speckling can appear quite dull at times, but when the light hits it just right, it reveals flashes of the same stunning sapphire found on the males.
A Life on the Move
These little hummers are a blur of activity, flitting from flower to flower in their quest for nectar. Their wings beat with incredible speed, a constant whirring that adds to the vibrant soundscape of the forest.
While they are relatively small, measuring just over 3 inches in length, their acrobatic maneuvers and feisty spirit make them a captivating sight. They are often seen perched precariously on a thin branch, their long, slightly decurved bill perfectly adapted for probing deep into flowers.
Habitat and Habits
The Blue-throated Goldentail prefers the humid forest edges, plantations, and woodlands of the tropical lowlands and foothills. Here at our mountain retreat, you’ll find them flitting amongst the flowering shrubs and trees of the understory and forest edges.
They are most active during the day, particularly in the early mornings and late afternoons when the nectar flow is at its peak.
