A Flash of Fire: The Rufous-Crested Coquette Visits Our Mountain Retreat

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Fire: The Rufous-Crested Coquette Visits Our Mountain Retreat

Even amongst the vibrant tapestry of birds that call Costa Rica home, the Rufous-crested Coquette stands out as a dazzling jewel. While sightings of this tiny hummingbird can be rare throughout its range, here at our mountain retreat nestled deep within the Costa Rican highlands, you have a delightful chance of encountering this fiery wonder.

A Crown of Fire

The male Rufous-crested Coquette is unmistakable. His namesake feature – a spiky crest of vibrant rufous feathers – sits proudly atop his head, resembling a miniature crown. This fiery detail contrasts beautifully with his metallic green body, creating a truly captivating sight. But the Coquette’s brilliance doesn’t stop there. His throat boasts a glittering green patch, known as a gorget, that shimmers with an iridescent sheen, catching the sunlight like a precious gem.

A Lady in Rufous

The female Coquette, while lacking the male’s flamboyant crest and gorget, is no less charming. Her plumage is a symphony of rufous and green, with a rufous forehead and a hint of rufous on her throat. Both sexes share a distinctive white rump band, a helpful identification marker when spotting these miniature marvels.

A Life on the Wing

The Rufous-crested Coquette is a creature of the forest edge, flitting between clearings, roadsides, and the fringes of the mountain forests we call home. Though not commonly found deep within the dense woodlands, their tiny size and rapid wing beats make them a marvel to observe even in these peripheral areas.

Keep an eye out for these feathered jewels as they dart from flower to flower, their wings a blur as they hover and sip nectar. Their high-pitched buzzing, a telltale sign of their rapid wing beats, might also give them away.

A Glimpse of Paradise

Here at our mountain retreat, surrounded by the lush greenery and vibrant flora of the Costa Rican highlands, you have a wonderful opportunity to witness the Rufous-crested Coquette in all its glory. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might just catch a glimpse of this fiery wonder flitting amongst the flowers, a dazzling testament to the beauty and diversity of Costa Rican birdlife.

Tips for Spotting the Rufous-Crested Coquette:

  • Visit the forest edges, clearings, and roadsides near our retreat.
  • Keep an eye out for small, rapidly moving hummingbirds with distinctive coloration.
  • Listen for their high-pitched buzzing sound.
  • Brightly colored flowers, especially those with tubular shapes, might attract these nectar-loving birds.

With a bit of luck and these helpful pointers, you might just be able to add the unforgettable sight of the Rufous-crested Coquette to your Costa Rican birding adventure.
