A Flash of Emerald: Unveiling the Green Thorntail

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Emerald: Unveiling the Green Thorntail

Hidden amongst the verdant tapestry of Costa Rica’s mountain forests flits a dazzling jewel – the Green Thorntail. This minuscule hummingbird, a resident of our secluded retreat’s high canopy, is a sight to behold for any nature enthusiast.

A Tiny Emerald Gem

The Green Thorntail, aptly named for its emerald plumage, is one of the smaller hummingbird species in Costa Rica. Males, slightly larger than their female counterparts, typically measure a mere 3.7 to 4 inches in length. Their crowning glory is undoubtedly their tail – long, forked, and adorned with wiry tips, it gives them a distinctive silhouette. Bathed in sunlight, the male’s feathers shimmer with an iridescent emerald sheen, making them appear like living jewels flitting between the leaves.

Females, while lacking the male’s flamboyant tail, are no less beautiful. They sport a more subdued green plumage, accentuated by a charming white “mustache” stripe and a prominent white rump band. Both sexes share this white rump band, a helpful field mark for identifying these tiny dynamos.

Life Amongst the Flowers

The Green Thorntail is a creature of the upper forest canopy, preferring the open areas within the dense foliage. Here, they flit from flower to flower, their short, straight bills perfectly adapted for sipping nectar. Their frenetic flight pattern, often described as bee-like, allows them to hover effortlessly as they feed. They are particularly drawn to small flowers, including those of epiphytes and shrubs, but may also supplement their diet with tiny flies and wasps.

A Glimpse into Paradise

Spotting a Green Thorntail requires a keen eye and a bit of patience. Their diminutive size and rapid movements can make them challenging to observe. However, their presence is often announced by their high-pitched squeaks and chatters.

For those fortunate enough to witness a Green Thorntail, it’s an unforgettable experience. Their dazzling plumage and frenetic energy epitomize the vibrancy of Costa Rica’s mountain forests. Our secluded location, nestled amidst the lush canopy, provides the perfect opportunity to encounter these emerald marvels.

Tips for Observing the Green Thorntail:

  • Early mornings and late afternoons: Green Thtails are most active during these times when flowers are producing the most nectar.
  • Listen for their calls: Their high-pitched squeaks and chatters can help you locate them.
  • Focus on flowering trees and shrubs: These are their preferred food sources.
  • Bring binoculars: Their small size makes binoculars essential for a good look.

By following these tips and immersing yourself in the tranquility of our mountain retreat, you might just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this dazzling hummingbird. The Green Thorntail is a testament to the wonders that await those who explore the hidden corners of Costa Rica’s natural paradise.
