Welcome back, nature enthusiasts, to another feathered friend gracing our mountain retreat in Costa Rica! Today, we turn our binoculars to a vibrant hummingbird, a flash of emerald and amethyst flitting between the flowers – the Green-breasted Mango.
A Misunderstood Name
Despite its name, the Green-breasted Mango has no connection to the tropical fruit. This delightful moniker is a historical quirk, arising from a mistaken identification by an early ornithologist. It stuck, and the Green-breasted Mango it proudly remains!
A Shimmering Gem
The Green-breasted Mango is a dazzling sight. Males boast a crown and upperparts that shimmer with a metallic bronze-green sheen. Their wings are a deep, dusky slate, while the tail feathers are a captivating combination of dull bronze and vibrant purple, each tipped with a metallic glint.
But the true showstopper lies on their chest. A bold, velvety black stripe runs down the center, flanked on either side by breathtaking metallic blue-green feathers. This mesmerizing contrast is sure to leave you breathless.
Females and Juveniles
Females and juveniles don’t have the same flamboyant plumage as the males. They sport a broader black stripe down the center of their throat and breast, with prominent white corners on their tails. Juveniles have an additional touch of russet mottling on their throats and breasts, adding a touch of earthy charm.
A Feathered Acrobat
The Green-breasted Mango is a master of aerial acrobatics. Their wings beat with incredible speed, allowing them to hover in mid-air as they sip nectar from flowers. Their long, decurved bills are perfectly adapted for reaching deep within blossoms, extracting their sweet rewards.
Finding Your Green-breasted Gem
These little jewels are widespread throughout Costa Rica, from the lowlands to the mountains (including our very own retreat!). You can find them flitting around gardens, flowering trees, and secondary forests. Look for them near brightly colored flowers like heliconias, gingers, and hibiscus – their favorites!
Listen for Their Song
The Green-breasted Mango isn’t just a visual treat; they also have a captivating song. Listen for a high-pitched “tsup” call and a buzzy, multisyllabic melody that adds to the ambiance of the Costa Rican rainforest.
Ambassadors of the Ecosystem
The Green-breasted Mango plays a vital role in the Costa Rican ecosystem. As they flit from flower to flower, they act as efficient pollinators, ensuring the continued health and diversity of plant life. Their presence is a sign of a thriving ecosystem.
So, the next time you’re relaxing on your balcony at our mountain retreat, keep your eyes peeled for a flash of emerald and amethyst. With a little patience, you might just be lucky enough to witness the dazzling beauty of the Green-breasted Mango.
