A Bright Cinnamon Feather
As its name suggests, the Cinnamon Woodpecker is an impressive bird adorned with rich reddish plumage. This medium-sized woodpecker, measuring around 19-23 cm (7.5-9.1 inches), boasts a bushy crest that adds a touch of majesty. Look closely and you’ll notice subtle differences between the sexes. Males sport a striking red patch extending from the chin to the throat and malar stripe, while females have a uniform reddish coloration on the head.
Masters of the Mountain Forests
Venture into the green embrace of the Costa Rican mountains and you might find the Cinnamon Woodpecker. Its natural habitat lies within subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, making our mountain retreat a perfect spot to observe these fascinating creatures. Primarily solitary or in pairs, they frequent the mid-levels and canopy of trees, skillfully navigating the dense foliage.
A Symphony of Sound
While their drumming on trees is a telltale sign of their presence, their vocalizations are equally captivating. Listen for their series of loud, staccato whistles that descend in pitch. This call, often compared to other woodpeckers of the Celeus genus, can be a helpful clue for identification.
A Key Species
The Cinnamon Woodpecker plays a vital role in the rainforest ecosystem. They act as natural pest controllers, using their strong beaks to excavate insects hidden beneath the bark. Their drumming also helps create cavities that other birds use for nesting.
Witness the Wonder
While sightings may be brief, the vibrant plumage and energetic drumming of the Cinnamon Woodpecker leave a lasting impression. If you’re staying at our retreat nestled in the mountains of Costa Rica, keep your eyes peeled (and ears tuned) for this feathered marvel! With a bit of patience and guidance from our experienced naturalists, you might catch a glimpse of this dazzling woodpecker flitting through the rainforest canopy.
