This shy and elusive bird is a true resident of the tropical forest canopy. Although rarely seen, its haunting calls resonate through the trees, a melancholic serenade that can be heard for hours, especially at dawn and dusk.
A Glimpse into the Secret World
The Slate-colored Tinamou is a compact bird, reaching only about 27 cm (11 inches) in length. Its plumage reflects the dappled light of the forest floor – a tapestry of black to brown on the head and back, rich brown wings, and a slate-gray breast, as its name suggests. A white patch adorns its throat, while the underside is a tableau of gray-brown adorned with darker bars on the flanks and under-tail.
Females are distinguished by distinct bars on their wings, a subtle difference that adds another layer of intrigue to this already cryptic species. Attentive observers might also spot their bright pink to red legs, a vibrant touch of color against the forest shadows.
A Master of Forest Foraging
Despite their terrestrial nature, Slate-colored Tinamous are surprisingly adept at navigating the tropical forest canopy. They follow mixed-species flocks, flitting among the leaves in search of a delectable meal. Their diet consists mainly of insects, which they glean from twigs and dead vines. They even display impressive acrobatics, briefly climbing larger branches to probe the bark for hidden treats.
An Inimitable Song
While sightings of the Slate-colored Tinamou are rare, its presence is undeniable thanks to its distinctive song. Imagine a series of 4 to 6 high-pitched notes, slowly descending in tone at the end. The melody itself is powerful, yet carries a subtle quality that can be easily overlooked by the untrained ear.
But here, in our mountain refuge, with the guidance of our experienced naturalists, you will learn to differentiate this song from similar calls. You might even confuse it with the Striped Xenops of the Amazon, but by listening more closely, you will discover the slower tempo of the Slate-colored Tinamou.
A Shy Jewel of the Tropical Forest
The Slate-colored Tinamou is a reminder that true beauty often hides in the hidden corners of the natural world. With a bit of patience and a keen ear, you might have the chance to glimpse this feathered wonder flitting through the trees. And even if you don’t, their haunting song will remain etched in your memory, a testament to the hidden wonders that grace our Costa Rican paradise.
