A Jewel of the Thraupidae Family

The Swallow Tanager (Tersina viridis) is a unique member of the Thraupidae family, standing out with its distinctive appearance and intriguing behaviors. Unlike its close relatives, the Swallow Tanager doesn’t just hop from branch to branch. This little daredevil displays a lifestyle that blends the grace of a tanager with the agility of a tyrant flycatcher.

Spectacular Sexual Dimorphism

A striking example of sexual dimorphism, the Swallow Tanager presents a stunning difference between males and females. The males are a sight to behold. Imagine a burst of azure blue, like a fragment of summer sky, adorning their bodies. This vibrant hue extends over their back, wings, and chest, creating a fascinating spectacle. A small mask and deep black bib add a touch of character to their face.

The females, although lacking the male’s flamboyant blue, are no less beautiful. They are dressed in a rich mossy green, a perfect camouflage amidst the verdant foliage. Their underside is a paler yellow, and their flanks are adorned with subtle dark olive bars.

A Bird of Two Worlds

The Swallow Tanager defies categorization. Although classified as a tanager, its hunting style is reminiscent of tyrant flycatchers. Perched upright on exposed branches or atop towering trees, it keenly observes its surroundings. As soon as an unwary insect stirs, the Swallow Tanager transforms into a turquoise or green blur. With a rapid wingbeat and a swift dash, it captures its prey mid-air, showcasing its impressive aerial skills.

A Frugal Appetite

Despite their impressive insectivorous talents, Swallow Tanagers are not averse to a bit of fruit. They happily indulge in a variety of fleshy fruits, especially the larger ones. Their broad, flat beak is perfectly adapted to extract the juicy pulp while cleverly discarding the seeds. This unique feeding style, along with their occasional habit of digging holes in riverbanks for nesting, further distinguishes them from their tanager cousins.

A Spectacle to Lift the Soul

Whether you spot a male, a flash of turquoise amid the greenery, or a female, a verdant jewel camouflaged among the leaves, the Swallow Tanager is sure to leave a lasting impression. Its vibrant colors, energetic behavior, and unique blend of foraging techniques make it a captivating addition to the avian tapestry of Costa Rica’s mountains.

So, keep your eyes open during your stay at our mountain retreat. With a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of this magnificent highland resident, a fleeting splash of color against the backdrop of Costa Rica’s rainforest.
