A Burst of Fire: The Red Tyrant Ignites Our Mountain Retreat

Home / Oiseaux / A Burst of Fire: The Red Tyrant Ignites Our Mountain Retreat

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the air is fresh and the emerald embrace of the rainforest reigns, a fervent visitor graces our sanctuary with its presence: the Scarlet Tanager. This dazzling singer is not an ordinary inhabitant of the rainforest. Unlike its neighbors with vibrant colors and complex patterns, the Scarlet Tanager bursts with a single color – a fiery red that would make a flame blush.

For the lucky observer who looks up to the canopy, spotting a Scarlet Tanager is an unforgettable experience. Imagine this: a tiny ember perched on a branch, its red plumage catching the dappled light filtering through the leaves. The male, source of this fiery display, is unmatched. His entire body, from head to tail base, is a crimson blaze, interrupted only by a hint of dark gray on his wings.

But the Scarlet Tanager is not just about aesthetics; it is a fierce hunter with a fascinating life cycle. Here, in our mountain sanctuary, surrounded by diverse flora and fauna, these small birds find the ideal habitat to thrive.

  • A winged hunter: Despite their small size (barely over 12 cm!), Scarlet Tanagers are agile predators. Their sharp eyes scan the surroundings from their perches, and as soon as they spot an unsuspecting insect, they launch into a dazzling display of aerial acrobatics. With ultra-fast reflexes and a short, hooked beak, they catch their prey in mid-air, returning to their perch to savor their meal.
  • A tale of two colors: While the male Scarlet Tanager is a spectacle in red, the female is a creature of more subtle elegance. Her plumage is a symphony of soft grays and browns, with a hint of warm salmon washing her underparts. This remarkable difference in coloration serves an important purpose. The male’s bright red acts as a signal to potential mates, while the female’s camouflage allows her to blend perfectly into the foliage, keeping her safe while she incubates her eggs.
  • A life among the leaves: Scarlet Tanagers nest in cavities, taking advantage of woodpecker holes or natural crevices in trees. The female lays a clutch of tiny speckled eggs that she incubates for about two weeks. Once hatched, both parents work tirelessly to bring food to their hungry chicks. After fledging, the young birds stay with their parents for a while before venturing out on their own.

Although the Scarlet Tanager is not as widespread in Costa Rica as other bird species, here in the mountains, where open areas meet the edge of the rainforest, it finds a suitable habitat. If you are patient and keep your eyes open during your stay in our sanctuary, you might be rewarded with a glimpse of this fiery wonder flying through the trees, a splash of color against the verdant backdrop of our mountain paradise.
