A Spark of Color
The Blue-tailed Hummingbird, also known as Saucerottia cyanura, lives up to its name with an impressive display of colors. Males sport a crown and back of deep metallic green, like shimmering emerald grass. This sheen extends to their undersides, though a hint of steel blue peeks towards the under-tail coverts. However, the true star is the tail. A flash of dark metallic blue-violet feathers creates a dazzling contrast with the green, making them impossible to overlook as they flit from flower to flower.
Females, while lacking the fascinating emerald sheen of the males, do not fall behind in the beauty department. They share the same deep blue tail, but their overall plumage is a more subdued green, transitioning to a grayish belly. Both sexes have a black bill with a touch of red at the base of the lower mandible, though this subtle detail can be hard to spot in the hustle of movement.
A Master of Hovering Flight
Hummingbirds are renowned for their incredible aerial skills, and the Blue-tailed Hummingbird is no exception. Their wings beat at an astonishing rate, allowing them to hover in the air while sipping nectar from flowers. This impressive feat is driven by their high metabolism, which requires them to feed constantly throughout the day.
Watching a Blue-tailed Hummingbird at a feeder or flower is a fascinating experience. They dart and glide with incredible precision, their tiny bodies defying gravity as they fly from flower to flower. Their long, slender bills are perfectly adapted to dive into the heart of flowers and access the sweet nectar they contain.
A Friend of the Forest
The Blue-tailed Hummingbird prefers forest edges, wooded areas, and even coffee plantations, making them frequent visitors to the grounds surrounding our retreat. They are particularly fond of flowering trees and shrubs, where they find a constant supply of food.
These little buzzers play a vital role in the tropical forest ecosystem. As they fly from flower to flower, they act as pollinators, ensuring the ongoing health and reproduction of many plant species. Their frenetic activity adds a touch of life and energy to the tropical forest, and their vibrant colors are a constant source of delight for bird watchers.
