A Tiny Emerald Gem

The Green Thorntail Hummingbird, aptly named for its emerald-colored plumage, is one of the smallest hummingbird species in Costa Rica. Males, slightly larger than females, generally measure just 9.5 to 10 centimeters in length. Its crowning glory is undoubtedly its tail: long, forked, and adorned with thin tips, giving it a distinctive silhouette. Bathed in sunlight, the male’s feathers shine with an iridescent emerald glow, making them appear like living jewels fluttering among the leaves.

Females, although lacking the male’s striking tail, are no less beautiful. They sport a more subdued green plumage, accented by a charming white “moustache” stripe and a prominent white band on the rump. Both sexes share this white rump band, a useful feature for identifying these tiny and dynamic hummingbirds.

Life Among the Flowers

The Green Thorntail Hummingbird is a creature of the high forest canopy, preferring open areas within dense foliage. Here, they flutter from flower to flower, their short, straight beak perfectly adapted for sipping nectar. Their frenetic flight pattern, often described as bee-like, allows them to hover effortlessly while feeding. They are particularly attracted to small flowers, including those of epiphytes and shrubs, but may also supplement their diet with tiny flies and wasps.

A Glimpse of Paradise

Spotting a Green Thorntail Hummingbird requires a keen eye and a bit of patience. Their small size and rapid movements can make them difficult to observe. However, their presence is often announced by their sharp calls and chatter.

For those fortunate enough to witness a Green Thorntail Hummingbird, it is an unforgettable experience. Their dazzling plumage and frenetic energy embody the vitality of Costa Rica’s cloud forests. Our secluded location, nestled amidst the lush tree canopy, provides the perfect opportunity to encounter these emerald wonders.

Tips for Observing the Green Thorntail Hummingbird:

  • Early morning and late afternoon: Green Thorntail Hummingbirds are most active during these periods when flowers produce more nectar.
  • Listen for their calls: Their sharp calls and chatter can help you locate them.
  • Focus on flowering trees and shrubs: These are their preferred food sources.
  • Bring binoculars: Its small size makes binoculars essential for good viewing.

By following these tips and immersing yourself in the tranquility of our mountain retreat, you may be lucky enough to spot this dazzling hummingbird. The Green Thorntail Hummingbird is a testament to the wonders that await those who explore the hidden corners of Costa Rica’s natural paradise.
