Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled in the emerald embrace of the mountains, we take pride in sharing with you the wonders of our biodiversity. Today, we turn our gaze towards a magnificent resident of the rainforest canopy, the Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens).

Adorned with a captivating crown, the Crested Guan is a fascinating member of the Cracidae family, a distant relative of the turkeys that strut around barnyards. Standing impressively at 76 to 91.5 cm (30 to 36 inches) tall and weighing 1.6 to 2.4 kg (3.5 to 5.3 pounds), this majestic bird is a sight to behold.
A Beauty Like No Other
Both male and female Crested Guans share similar plumage, a dark olive-brown that gleams with faint greenish or purplish sheens – a dazzling display when the sunlight kisses their feathers just right. Their underparts feature a rich chestnut belly and rump, while the breast and belly feathers are edged with a touch of elegant white.
But the true showstopper is the impressive crest adorning their head. This bushy crown of feathers adds an air of royalty, turning the Crested Guan into a true avian monarch of the rainforest. Their face is adorned with grayish bare skin around the eyes, accented by a pair of bright red wattles and dewlaps on the throat, a vibrant touch of color that adds to their distinctive appearance.
Una Vida Entre las Hojas
The Crested Guan is an arboreal bird par excellence, meaning it spends most of its days perched in the lush foliage of the rainforest canopy. Skilled climbers and walkers, they gracefully navigate the branches, in search of the fruits, leaves, and flowers that make up their diet.
These social birds are often observed in pairs or family groups of up to 6-12 individuals. Their calls, a loud and resonant series of «whrroo-whrroo,» can often be heard echoing through the rainforest, a testament to their hidden presence among the leaves.
A Species of Concern
While the Crested Guan is not currently classified as endangered, the IUCN lists it as Near Threatened. Habitat loss due to deforestation is a major concern for this magnificent bird. At our Costa Rican retreat, we are committed to sustainable practices that protect the rainforest ecosystem and the incredible biodiversity it harbors.
Spotting the Crested Guan
While the Crested Guan may be elusive, keeping your eyes peeled in the upper levels of the rainforest canopy during your nature walks might reward you with a glimpse of this feathered wonder. Their loud calls can also be a good indicator of their presence.
With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might be lucky enough to witness the Crested Guan in all its splendor, a true testament to the beauty and diversity of Costa Rica’s avian life.
