From your private balcony at our mountain retreat, raise your binoculars to a sudden movement silhouetted against the sky. Could it be a hawk? An eagle? The Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis) is a medium-sized falcon, with a slender build, long wings, and an impressive tail. While smaller than its peregrine cousin, the Aplomado has a dazzling personality. This avian hunter is a kaleidoscope of colors. Imagine a sleek steel-gray back contrasting with a vibrant reddish-orange chest. Bold black markings frame the face, creating a striking «moustache» effect, while a crisp white band separates it from the throat. Look for a black band on the belly followed by a flash of orange on the lower body, completing this feathered masterpiece.

While not as commonly seen as other Costa Rican birds, the Aplomado Falcon can be spotted soaring over open areas, particularly along the Pacific coast and dry lowlands. Here, at our mountain retreat nestled amidst lush greenery, sightings are less frequent. However, with a keen eye and a bit of patience, you might spot this magnificent falcon venturing from the mountain slopes in search of prey.

Speaking of prey, the Aplomado Falcon is a hunter par excellence. With ultra-fast dives and agile maneuvers, it specializes in catching birds and insects in mid-air. It is also known to take down small mammals and lizards on the ground, showcasing its adaptability. Watch for these falcons perched on fence posts or telephone wires, ever vigilant for their next meal.

The story of the Aplomado Falcon in Costa Rica is one of resilience. Once common, its population declined due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Fortunately, conservation efforts are underway, with reintroduction programs aiming to restore these beautiful birds to their former glory.

So, next time you are relaxing on your balcony, enveloped by the tranquility of the Costa Rican mountains, keep an eye out for a flash of color in the sky. It could be the Aplomado Falcon, a reminder of the vibrant tapestry of life thriving in this incredible country.
