High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the air is fresh and the views endless, we at the lodge are fortunate to witness an amazing variety of visiting birds. Today, we turn our gaze to a rare guest, the Southern Martin (Progne elegans).

Although not native to Costa Rica, this elegant swallow has made some surprise appearances in recent years. The first documented sighting, in 2022, caused a stir among the birdwatching community. This swallow, usually found in South America from Argentina to Colombia, became the 924th confirmed bird species in Costa Rica!

A Glimpse of the Southern Martin

The Southern Martin is a sight to behold. With a shiny blue-black back and head that sharply contrast with a pure white chest and belly, this swallow exudes elegance. Both sexes share this striking plumage, although females may have a slightly duller sheen. Its forked tail adds a touch of dynamism as they soar through the air.

These birds are known for their aerial acrobatics. They are tireless insectivores, capturing their prey in mid-flight with impressive agility. Watch closely and you might see them dive and swoop, their wings glistening in the sunlight as they catch insects on the wing.

An Unusual Encounter in the Mountains

The presence of the Southern Martin in Costa Rica is a testament to the ever-evolving patterns of bird distribution. While their usual range is further south, climate change or other factors may be influencing their behavior. Here, in the mountains, with open areas and abundant flying insects, they may find suitable feeding grounds.

Spotting a Southern Martin at our lodge is a rare luxury. However, its close relative, the Gray-breasted Martin (Progne tapera), has also been historically sighted in Costa Rica, although no confirmed sightings have been reported in recent decades.

Keeping an Eye on the Sky

While the status of the Southern Martin in Costa Rica remains uncertain, their occasional appearances add a touch of wonder to birdwatching in our mountainous paradise. Our naturalists are always on the lookout for new feathered friends, and we encourage our guests to keep their eyes peeled for this remarkable swallow.

So, the next time you visit our mountain lodge, take a moment to look up at the sky. You might be lucky enough to witness the Southern Martin, an unusual visitor gracing our mountain skies with its elegance and aerial acrobatics.
