While Costa Rica’s rainforests are teeming with resident birds, we also have the privilege of witnessing incredible feathered travelers. One such visitor is the Pacific Golden Plover, a striking shorebird that graces our skies during its epic migrations.

A Golden Flash Across the Mountains

Imagine this: you’re practicing yoga on our mountaintop terrace, the fresh morning air revitalizing your senses. Suddenly, a flock of birds crosses the clear blue sky, their wings shimmering with an unexpected golden flash. Those, my friends, are the Pacific Golden Plovers in all their splendor.

Master of Long Distances

These medium-sized shorebirds breed in the distant lands of Alaska and Siberia. But when winter arrives, they embark on incredible journeys, flying over vast stretches of the Pacific Ocean to reach their wintering grounds. Costa Rica, with its diverse habitats, is a favorite destination for these long-distance flight champions.

Spotting a Golden Gem

While you may not find them in the rainforest itself, the Pacific Golden Plovers frequent grasslands, playing fields, and even golf courses during their stay. Look for a slender-bodied bird, short bill, and most strikingly, plumage that lives up to its name.

  • Breeding Season Elegance: During the breeding season, the Pacific Golden Plover sports a truly spectacular outfit. Its back is a fascinating tapestry of golden, black, and white speckles. The face and underparts are deep black, contrasting with a crisp white stripe running down the neck and flanks.
  • Winter Attire: After breeding, its plumage becomes more subdued. The golden tones become muted, and the black and white markings soften. However, its slender body and graceful movements remain telltale.

Un Festín para los Sentidos

The Pacific Golden Plovers are a delight to watch. They feed by running and stopping abruptly, probing the ground with their bill for insects and worms. Their calls are a gentle series of whistles and peeps, adding to the serenity of the mountain setting.

A Temporary Treasure

The Pacific Golden Plover graces us with its presence from September to April. So, if you’re planning a mountain retreat during these months, keep your eyes peeled for these fleeting flashes of gold. They are a beautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of the natural world, a world where even the most remote mountains can be a stopover on a grand global adventure.

Más Allá de las Montañas

While the Pacific Golden Plover may not be a permanent resident of our mountain retreat, Costa Rica offers a haven for many other bird species year-round. Stay tuned for our upcoming blog posts where we’ll explore the resident and migratory feathered wonders that adorn our rainforests, beaches, and skies.
