Immerse yourself in the symphony of the rainforest at our Costa Rican retreat. Today, we turn our binoculars towards a true canopy aristocrat, the Black-and-white Becard (Conopias albovittatus). This dazzling bird, with its striking markings and commanding perch, is sure to catch your eye (and ear) during your stay.

A King Among Tyrants

While several tyrants adorn the skies of Costa Rica, the Black-and-white Becard stands out for its elegance. Imagine a medium-sized bird, with a touch of bright yellow on the underside contrasting with a sharp black and white head pattern. The key feature, as its name suggests, is the white «ring» – actually a broad white eyebrow wrapping around the entire back of the head, forming a regal diadem.

Spotting a Crowned Jewel

Keep your eyes peeled for the Black-and-white Becard high in the forest canopy. Unlike its close relatives, the Social Flycatcher or the Great Kiskadee, this bird prefers leafy heights, perching atop tall trees. It might even remind you of a pseudo-cotinga with its refined taste for the treetop realm.

Revealing Traits

While the white crown is a hint, there’s more to identify this becard. Look for a visibly long and slender bill – finer than the Great Kiskadee’s but longer than the Social Flycatcher’s. The cheeks are deep black, with no trace of gray, and the wings are a monotone brown, without any reddish hue.

A Master of the Hunt

A true insectivore, the Black-and-white Becard patiently surveys its domain from its elevated perch. Thanks to its keen eyesight, it spots a fluttering insect and takes flight in a flash of yellow. Its sharp bill skillfully snatches the prey mid-air, a testament to its impressive hunting techniques.

Habitat Haven

The Black-and-white Becard is a resident of the tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests of Costa Rica. It can also be found in heavily degraded former forests, showcasing its adaptability. So, if you explore the lush rainforests surrounding our retreat, keep an eye out for this magnificent bird.

An Unforgettable Sight (and Sound)

The Black-and-white Becard is not just a visual delight. Listen for its vocalizations – a series of whistled and loud notes that add to the rich soundscape of the Costa Rican rainforest.

Your Birdwatching Adventure Awaits

Our mountain retreat is a paradise for birdwatchers. With its diverse habitats, we offer the perfect opportunity to observe the Black-and-white Becard and countless other avian wonders. So, prepare your binoculars, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to be enchanted by the feathered jewels of Costa Rica.
