Un Rayo de Sol en las Montañas: El Chlorospingus Verde

Home / aves / Un Rayo de Sol en las Montañas: El Chlorospingus Verde

High in the Costa Rican mountains, where the air is fresh and the emerald embrace of the rainforest fades away, resides a small ray of sunshine: the Green Chlorospingus. This small but vibrant songbird is a familiar sight for our retreat guests, fluttering among the trees and adding a touch of melody to the mountain breeze.

The Green Chlorospingus, also known as the Common Bush-Tanager, is a resident breeder in the highlands of Central and South America. Here in Costa Rica, you will find them in all the mountain ranges, from the Central Cordillera to the Talamanca. So, keep your eyes peeled during your hikes and nature walks: these little bursts of color might brighten your day.

A Distinctive Attire

While not the most flamboyant bird in Costa Rica, the Green Chlorospingus has a certain charm in its understated elegance. Its upper parts are a soft yellow-green, like the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves. Its head is a bit more variable, ranging from grayish to brown depending on the region. But the most distinctive feature is the bold white patch behind its eye, a sort of bird monocle that adds a touch of personality.

A Social Butterfly (or Should We Say Bird?)

The Green Chlorospingus is rarely seen alone. They are social birds, usually found in small groups or flitting about as part of a mixed feeding flock. They are quite active, flitting from branch to branch in search of food. Their diet consists mainly of insects, spiders, small fruits, and even occasional nectar.

A Song in the Mountains

While not known for elaborate songs, the Green Chlorospingus has a sharp and pleasant trill. It is a sound that blends seamlessly with the symphony of the mountain forest, a constant reminder of the vibrant life thriving here.

Spotting Your Own Green Chlorospingus

The best places to find the Green Chlorospingus are in the evergreen and pine-cypress forests, particularly in the foothills and highlands. Look for them near fruit trees and shrubs, where they often gather to enjoy a tasty snack. They are also quite common in mixed feeding flocks, so following the sounds of a larger group of birds might lead you to these little rays of sunshine.

A Little Treasure

The Green Chlorospingus may be small, but it adds a charming touch to the mountain ecosystem. Its cheerful presence and vibrant plumage are a constant reminder of the beauty and diversity of life here in the Costa Rican mountains. So, next time you explore the highlands, keep your eyes open for this little ray of sunshine: the Green Chlorospingus might become your new favorite feathered friend.
