While toucans and scarlet macaws often steal the spotlight, Costa Rica’s rainforest teems with life, featuring smaller yet equally vibrant birds. One such marvel is the Black-capped Warbler, a fluttering ray of sunshine frequenting the mountain forests around our retreat.

A Dazzling Duo
The Black-capped Warbler is a migratory songbird that graces the Costa Rican mountains from March to September before returning to its breeding grounds in eastern North America. Look for them in the dense undergrowth of mature forests, especially those with a healthy shrub layer.
The Black-capped Warbler is a play of contrasts. The male is a sight to behold. It sports a bright yellow face and throat, spectacularly framed by a sleek black cap that extends down its neck. Its back is a warm olive green, complementing its bright yellow underparts. The female Black-capped Warbler is no less striking. While lacking the bold black cap, her olive green crown and vivid yellow cheeks make her a vision in the dim light.
A Telltale Tail
The Black-capped Warbler is a master of camouflage, slipping and hopping through the underbrush in search of insects. But there’s a telltale sign that can help you spot it: its tail. Watch for a flash of white. The Black-capped Warbler has a habit of quickly flicking its tail open and closed, revealing the white outer feathers. This behavior is believed to be a way of communicating with other Black-capped Warblers or startling predators.
Un Canto de las Montañas
The song of the Black-capped Warbler is a beautiful and complex melody, a series of whistles, trills, and buzzes. Each male Black-capped Warbler sings a slightly different variation, creating a unique soundscape in the mountain forests. Interestingly, these small songbirds are excellent vocal mimics, capable of incorporating sounds from their environment into their songs.
A Ray of Sunshine
While the Black-capped Warbler may be a seasonal visitor, spotting it in the underbrush of the tropical forest is a true delight. Its vibrant colors, restless tail, and beautiful songs are a delightful reminder of the hidden wonders adorning the mountains of Costa Rica.
