A Black and Yellow Beauty
The Black-cowled Oriole (Icterus prosthemelas) is a medium-sized songbird, generally measuring between 18.5 and 21 centimeters (7.3 to 8.3 inches) in length. While not the most striking bird in Costa Rica, its plumage is undoubtedly eye-catching.
The males are the true stars of the show. They sport an elegant black «hood» covering their head, back, wings, and chest. This dramatic black is offset by bright yellow patches on their shoulders, rump, and underparts. The contrast is striking, making them easy to spot flitting among the trees.
The females, on the other hand, display a more subtle beauty. In the northern part of their range, which includes Costa Rica, they have a black face that transitions into a greenish-brown back. Their underparts are a warm yellow, creating a more muted color palette compared to the males. Interestingly, in the southern extremes of their Central American habitat, the females become more like the males, sporting primarily black plumage with yellow accents.
A Forest Favorite
Black-cowled Orioles are not shy birds. They frequent humid and semi-humid forests but can also be found along forest edges, clearings, and even gardens. Our retreat, located on the mountain slopes, offers the perfect habitat for these adaptable birds. Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails, as they might cross your path, their bright yellow a beacon in the lush greenery.
Melodies, Not Mimics
While orioles are known for their impressive vocalizations, the Black-cowled Oriole is not as famous for its song as some of its cousins. Their calls are described as quite simple, a series of whistles and chirps. However, what they lack in complexity they make up for in enthusiasm. Their calls often mark the symphony of the tropical forest, adding a bright and cheerful note to the chorus.
A Fruitful Life
Black-cowled Orioles are omnivorous, with a diet that leans heavily towards fruits. They have a special fondness for figs, bananas, and berries. They also readily consume insects, nectar, and even small lizards. This varied diet allows them to thrive in a variety of habitats.
Una Especie Bajo Preocupación Menor
Fortunately, the Black-cowled Oriole is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. Their populations appear stable and they easily adapt to semi-open areas, including agricultural fields. Here, at our retreat, we strive to create a sustainable environment that welcomes these vibrant birds.
A Splash of Color, a Song of Joy
The Black-cowled Oriole may not be the most dazzling bird in Costa Rica, but its cheerful presence and striking plumage make it a delightful addition to the tropical forest experience. As you explore the green landscape surrounding our retreat, keep an eye out for this ray of sunshine flitting among the trees. You might be rewarded with a glimpse of this captivating Costa Rican resident.
