Identifying the Sicalis Dorsoestriado
Imagine a sparrow bathed in sunlight. The Sicalis Dorsoestriado measures about 19 cm in length, with greenish upper parts streaked with dark brown. Look for a flash of bright yellow: its characteristic robust yellow bill. The underside is a clean beige, wonderfully contrasting with the darker back. But the most striking feature is undoubtedly the tail: long, graduated, and ending in sharp or filamentous tips, like the tail of a miniature comet.
Finding Your Winged Friend
While the Sicalis Dorsoestriado has a surprisingly wide distribution in South America, in Costa Rica they are more likely to be found in the lowlands and foothills. They prefer dry savannas, seasonally wet grasslands, and even slightly degraded old forests. So keep your eyes peeled while exploring the base of our mountain range or taking a day trip to nearby pastures.
A Grassland Specialist
The Sicalis Dorsoestriado is a true specialist, perfectly adapted to its grassy habitat. Their thick yellow bills are perfect for cracking seeds, their main food source. They feed on the ground, hopping and flitting among grass stems, their long tail acting as a rudder for quick changes of direction. You might see them in pairs or even small groups, their soft chip notes a subtle addition to the grassland symphony.
Una Parte Vital del Ecosistema
Small as they are, the Sicalis Dorsoestriado play a crucial role. By consuming large quantities of seeds, they help control weed populations, promoting healthy grasslands. In turn, these healthy grasslands provide essential habitat for a variety of other animals, creating a balanced ecosystem.
