A Crowned Jewel: Encounter with the Crested Quail in the Mountains of Costa Rica

Home / aves / A Crowned Jewel: Encounter with the Crested Quail in the Mountains of Costa Rica

Here, in our Costa Rican mountain retreat, nature unfolds in a symphony of sights and sounds. Today, we focus our attention on a small ground dweller with a surprising crest: the Crested Quail (Colinus cristatus). While not as flashy as some of its tropical forest cousins, the charm of this bird lies in its subtle beauty and reserved nature.

A South American Visitor

The Crested Quail is a resident of northern South America, with a range extending through Panama and just reaching Costa Rica. It is also found on some Caribbean islands like Aruba and Curacao. Therefore, spotting this small bird in the Costa Rican mountains is a true delight for bird watchers.

A Charismatic Ground Bird

Measuring just between 17 and 21 cm in length, the Crested Quail is a compact bird. Both sexes have a similar appearance, sporting an upper body mottled with brown, black, and gray. But the real star of the show is the crest! The long feathers on the forehead and crown can be pale beige or white, sometimes with darker tips, creating a distinguished air. The underside is a canvas of pale beige, cinnamon, and black markings, adding a touch of warmth.

Listen to Its Call

While the Crested Quail may be shy, its presence is often revealed by its song. The male’s song, particularly prominent during the breeding season, is a distinctive three-syllable «quoit bob-white» or a two-syllable «oh, wheet.» Keep your ears tuned during hikes or nature walks; with a bit of patience, you might be rewarded with this charming melody.

Una Vida en el Suelo

Unlike some birds that spend most of their time perched on branches, the Crested Quail is a truly terrestrial bird. It prefers dry scrublands, seasonally flooded grasslands, and even lightly wooded areas. In our mountain retreat, you may find them foraging for seeds, leaves, and small invertebrates along forest edges or clearings.

Una Especie Bajo Preocupación Menor

Fortunately, the Crested Quail is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN. Its populations appear stable and it easily adapts to slightly disturbed habitats. However, habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion remains a potential threat.

A Glimpse of Wildlife

Observing a Crested Quail in the wild can be a magical experience. Its reserved nature means you might only hear it sing or catch a fleeting glimpse as it glides through the underbrush. But that’s part of its charm! In our retreat, we invite you to explore the diverse ecosystems that surround us, keeping your eyes peeled (and ears tuned) to this small crested wonder.
