A Flash of Emerald and Amethyst
This medium-sized hummingbird is a true jewel of the mountains. The male Green-crowned Brilliant is a vision of bright emerald green on top, with a fascinating amethyst touch adorning its throat. A fine white line behind the eye adds a touch of elegance, and the pièce de résistance, a bright white belly, honors the bird’s name.
The female, though not as striking, is no less captivating. She shares the same bright white belly and striking eye line, but her throat is adorned with a pattern of delicate green spots, offering a subtle contrast to the vibrant plumage of the male.
A Forest Dweller with a Garden Air
While primarily a creature of the mountain forests, the Green-crowned Brilliant has no trouble venturing to the edges, where it can be seen flitting among flowering shrubs and trees. This makes it a charming visitor to the gardens and balconies of our mountain retreat in Costa Rica.
A Life on the Wing
Like all hummingbirds, the Green-crowned Brilliant is a marvel of aerial acrobatics. Its wings beat at an astonishing rate, allowing it to hover in the air while probing the depths of flowers with its long, slender beak. This rapid wingbeat also creates a characteristic hum, a delightful serenade that adds to the magic of encountering this tiny wonder.
