A Jewel in the Understory

The Band-tailed Barbthroat (Threnetes ruckeri) is a medium-sized hummingbird, a shimmering marvel measuring only 10-11 centimeters. While not as common as some of its flashy relatives, spotting it is a guaranteed thrill.

A Glimpse of Its Plumage

The male Band-tailed Barbthroat is a sight to behold. Its upper parts shine with a bronzy-green glow, contrasting sharply with a dark patch on the ear and chin. A dark stripe runs along its cheek, adding a touch of intrigue. But the true star is the tail. Black feathers with bright white tips create a striking barred pattern, a namesake feature that flashes when the bird takes flight.

But the Band-tailed Barbthroat is not just a nectar lover. This tiny hunter also supplements its diet with small arthropods, especially spiders. It employs a fascinating technique called “trap-lining,” visiting a circuit of flowering plants it knows offer both nectar and potential prey.
