The Rufous-capped Tanager, with its scientific name Tangara gyrola, is a medium-sized songbird belonging to the Thraupidae family. Measuring around 14 cm in length, it is a captivating sight. True to its name, the male Rufous-capped Tanager sports an intense chestnut crown, a vibrant contrast to its grass-green back. This striking headpiece is further accentuated by a delicate yellow band on the nape, adding a touch of elegance. But the color show doesn’t stop there! The rump and underparts transform into a fascinating turquoise, creating a stunning combination. The flanks and undertail coverts, however, remain a subtle green, beautifully tying the whole look together.
The females, though lacking the males’ bright colors, are no less charming. They share the same basic plumage pattern but in a more muted palette, with their greens and blues appearing more subdued. This subtle difference highlights the males’ vibrant display, making them stand out among the foliage.
But the Rufous-capped Tanager is not just a pretty face (or rather, a pretty head). These social butterflies are often seen flitting about in pairs or small family groups. They are also quite sociable, frequently joining mixed flocks with other tanager and honeycreeper species. Their days are filled with flitting through the forest canopy, their keen eyes searching for a delicious meal. They are primarily frugivorous, with a diet rich in various fruits and berries.
Listen closely, and you might be rewarded with the melodious song of the Rufous-capped Tanager. It is a slow, deliberate sequence of «see» notes, followed by a sharper «tsou, tsooy.» This unique call is a charming addition to the symphony of sounds from the rainforest that will surround you during your stay at our retreat.
