This tiny jewel, also known as the golden-tailed sapphire, is an impressive spectacle. While both males and females sport golden-green tails (which often appear grayish under certain light), the males are the true stars of the show.
A Dazzling Display of Feathers
The male golden-tailed hummingbird is a feathered kaleidoscope. Its crown and back shine with an iridescent emerald glow. Its throat, which gives the bird its name, is a patch of dazzling violet that seems to capture sunlight and transform into a miniature sapphire.
This striking gorget (throat patch) is further accentuated by a bright red bill, slightly curved downward. It is a combination of colors both elegant and striking, a true testament to nature’s artistry.
Females: Subtle Sophistication
The females, although lacking the male’s striking gorget, are no less beautiful. They have a more subdued coloration, with a bronzed green back and a touch of violet speckling on the throat. This speckling can appear quite dull at times, but when the light hits it just right, it reveals flashes of the same dazzling sapphire found in the males.
A Life in Motion
These little buzzers are a blur of activity, flitting from flower to flower in search of nectar. Their wings beat at an incredible speed, a constant hum that adds to the vibrant soundscape of the forest.
Though relatively small, measuring just over 3 inches long, their acrobatic maneuvers and feisty spirit make them a captivating sight. They are often seen perched precariously on a thin branch, their long, slightly curved bill perfectly adapted for probing deep into flowers.
Hábitat y Costumbres
The golden-tailed blue-throated hummingbird prefers the edges of moist forests, plantations, and lowland tropical forests and hills. Here, in our mountain haven, you will find them flitting among the flowering shrubs and trees of the understory and forest edges.
They are most active during the day, especially in the early morning and late afternoon, when nectar flow peaks.
